Vice President JD Vance won’t take paternity leave following the birth of his fourth child, according to his office.
The vice president and second lady, Usha Vance, welcomed the birth of Alec Neel Vance, the couple’s third son, over the weekend.
“Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother,” Vance wrote in a statement on Sunday, calling the staff at Walter Reed Medical Center and the White House’s own medical unit a “blessing.”
Vance’s office declined to say on Monday whether he would take paternity leave, but pointed to comments he made to NBC this past spring, just before White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt took two months of maternity leave for the birth of her second child.
In that interview, Vance said that he planned to spend more time working from home with his family.
While Vance isn’t unaccustomed to growing his family while balancing a full work portfolio — his daughter Mirabel was born in late 2021 while he was campaigning for the U.S. Senate — Alec’s birth comes at a particularly pressing time for the Trump administration.

President Donald Trump has renewed his war against Iran, even while Vance and other top administration officials continue a possible peace dialogue with Tehran. The vice president had previously been the point person for the 60-day memorandum of understanding talks before Trump closed that period earlier this month.
Furthermore, Vance, who is serving as the Republican National Committee’s finance chairman, will likely still need to spend a significant amount of time on the campaign trail in support of Republican candidates and helping the party raise money for the 2026 election cycle.
