CNN analyst Van Jones warned that the Democratic Party risks undermining itself if it fails to reject what he described as increasingly “regressive” ideas emerging from the Left.
Jones’ remarks follow a growing ideological debate within the Democratic Party over the role of its progressive wing. While many Democrats support reforms to policing, criminal justice, and immigration, disagreements have emerged over more sweeping proposals championed by activists on the Left.
Jones said he has long hoped to see a youth movement energize progressive politics but argued that some activists have pushed the movement in an extreme direction.
“I’ve been waiting my whole life to see a youth movement do what it’s doing,” Jones wrote on X. “But it’s being hijacked by people who are putting in nutty ideas, supporting terrorists, nutty ideas saying we don’t need cops and prisons. We can’t deport anybody, even if they rape somebody.”
Jones argued that Democrats must be willing to distinguish between legitimate progressive policies and what he views as radical positions.
If we can’t say right from wrong, if we can’t say good from bad, if we can’t separate progressive ideas from regressive ideas, we’re going down the same pathway that has pulled the Republican Party into an unrecognizable shell of itself,” he said. “And I refuse to let that happen.”
Jones took to X to elaborate, pointing to figures such as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani as an example of a progressive he says has hijacked the movement by pushing “insane, outlandish and nutty ideas that have nothing to do with core issues like affordability, climate solutions, and health care.”
“For example, Mamdani picked a DSA candidate who wants to abolish the police, empty every prison, erase every border and discourage interracial dating. Okayyyy … So clearly, [Darializa Avila] Chevalier has no problem condemning things,” Jones wrote.

Jones noted his stance as being progressive and emphasized that his criticism comes from within the Democratic Party rather than opposition to reform itself.
“Supporting Hamas is not progressive. The idea of ‘no police, no prisons, no borders,’ which would let pedophiles, human traffickers, terrorists, hate groups and crime syndicates run wild, is not progressive for vulnerable communities. Celebrating the murder of Israeli civilians is NOT progressive. These ideas are regressive,” he said.
