Washington Examiner chief political correspondent Byron York said President Donald Trump needs to focus on issues that voters care about in the midterm elections, and less on the Iran war.
“It’s fine to measure MAGA voters and see how they support the president because there was a question at the beginning whether they would oppose a new war started by the president, and in fact they supported it, but it doesn’t matter that much for the electorate this coming midterm,” York said on Fox Business’s Kudlow Monday.
According to the 2026 Reagan Institute Summer Survey, 89% of Make America Great Again-aligned Republicans approve of Iranian bombing, and 86% approve of ending Iran’s nuclear weapons program.
York maintained that while Republicans want the support of MAGA voters, the Iran war is not the focus.
“I think anybody who is running a Republican campaign would also disagree” the Iran war should be a main concern, York said.
York highlighted other issues that need to be prioritized during the midterm elections.

“When you’re talking about the war, you have to remember it’s still not the most important issue on midterm voters’ minds. That’s certainly the cost of living and the economy in general. Other issues like immigration and healthcare regularly [outweigh] concern about the war as top voter concerns,” York said.
York underscored growing dissatisfaction from Republicans over the United States’s involvement in Iran, saying “there is significant disapproval of the president’s conduct of the war and of the war itself.”
