President Trump Skewers Governor For ‘Adding So Many Taxes,’ But She Won’t Rule Out More

When it comes to blue-state governors imposing confiscatory taxes on their constituents, there’s no shortage of culprits to call out.

But President Donald Trump has taken one governor in particular to account lately, and it’s not one of the usual culprits like Newsom or Walz.

Fox News covered the latest:

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger left the door open to imposing taxes on services like gym memberships, digital subscriptions and dog grooming when asked about the possibility during a recent interview.

“I think every idea, as long as it’s reasonable and makes some amount of sense, should be discussed,” Spanberger told a local ABC affiliate.

“I think there are worthy conversations to be had about what revenue generation looks like into the future as our economy changes in so many ways.”

The comment comes as Spanberger tries to leave the door open to exploring new sources of revenue for Virginia while also fending off accusations from the White House that have painted her as a tax-happy Democrat.

“So sad! She is adding so many taxes: a food and beverage tax, digital services tax, utilities tax and more. People are leaving that would never have even thought of doing so!” Trump said in a post to Truth Social.

“This went from a thriving and powerful place to a commonwealth run by a person who has no concept of low taxes and economic strength.”

Those criticisms stemmed from a handful of bills introduced in the Virginia state legislature that, if implemented, would extend taxes to: storage facilities, counseling, dry cleaning, vehicle repair, website design, data storage and digital subscription storage.

Spanberger’s tax-and-spend policies have faced widespread criticism as Virginians continue to see their impact on everyday life:

As ARL Now reported, the governor pushed back on Trump’s earlier criticism last month. But even if her argument here is semantically correct, that doesn’t negate the fact that she said in a subsequent interview that no new tax is off limits:

Spanberger pushed back on X, saying Trump and his allies were spreading “fake news about fake taxes.” None of the taxes Trump referenced were signed into law, she noted.

In an unusual press release, Spanberger’s office listed the tax proposals and said the release was necessary to correct “misinformation — spread across social media and repeated in press coverage.”

The tax bills in question were introduced by Democratic lawmakers early in the 2026 General Assembly session but failed to pass — or even come up for a vote — in their chamber of origin, the governor’s office said.

The legislative session ended March 14.
