Mexico’s President has rejected President Trump’s offer to send U.S. troops into Mexico to help fight drug trafficking.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, while speaking to supporters in Eastern Mexico, shared that she denied the Trump administration’s offer of receiving U.S. troops into Mexico to fight drug cartels.

Sheinbaum stated Trump called her and shared, ‘How can we help you fight drug trafficking? I propose that the United States military come in and help you.’

She responded and said “No” and continued, “Sovereignty is not for sale. Sovereignty is loved and defended.”

Here’s what ABC News reported:

President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico said on Saturday that U.S. President Donald Trump proposed sending American troops into Mexico to help her administration fight drug trafficking but that she rejected it.

Her remarks to supporters in eastern Mexico came in response to a Wall Street Journal article published the day before, describing a tense phone call last month in which Trump reportedly pressured her to accept a bigger role for the U.S. military in combating drug cartels in Mexico.

“He said, ‘How can we help you fight drug trafficking? I propose that the United States military come in and help you.’ And you know what I said to him? ‘No, President Trump.'”

She added: “Sovereignty is not for sale. Sovereignty is loved and defended.”

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Sheinbaum’s remarks.

The U.S. military presence has increased steadily along its southern border with Mexico in recent months, following Trump’s order in January to increase the army’s role in stemming the flow of migrants.

The U.S. Northern Command has surged troops and equipment to the border, increased manned surveillance flights to monitor fentanyl trafficking along the border and sought expanded authority for U.S. Special Forces to work closely with Mexican forces conducting operations against cartels.

Per Reuters:

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Saturday that U.S. President Donald Trump had proposed sending U.S. troops to Mexico to combat drug trafficking, but said she had rejected that offer because “sovereignty is not for sale.”

Sheinbaum’s comments were in response to questions about a Wall Street Journal report published on May 2 that said Trump was pressuring Mexico to allow deeper U.S. military involvement against drug cartels to combat trafficking across the shared border.

“In one of the calls, (Trump) said, ‘How can we help you fight drug trafficking? I propose that the U.S. Army come in to help you,'” said Sheinbaum, who was speaking at a university event near the capital on Saturday.

“And you know what I told him? No, President Trump, the territory is sacrosanct, sovereignty is sacrosanct, sovereignty is not for sale, sovereignty is loved and defended,” the president said, adding that while the two countries can collaborate, “we will never accept the presence of the United States military in our territory.”

A spokesperson for the U.S. National Security Council (NSC) said in response to a Reuters request for comment that Trump had been “crystal clear that Mexico must do more to combat these gangs and cartels and the United States stands ready to assist and expand the already close cooperation between our two countries.”
