Iyah May had a message to tell, not just a song to sing.

And when the Australian-based singer was confronted with the usual orders from on high to conform, she opted to stick to her convictions and go it alone.

Her manager dropped her, and Iyah’s explosively raw lyrics survived the usual process of censorship to see the light of day.

And before I drop the first clip… I want to tease you with another piece of the puzzle.

Iyah is a medical doctor who worked the frontlines during the Covid catastrophe.

Now here’s the clip that I stumbled across earlier of a portion of her powerful song, “Karmageddon” — and instantly knew I had to share it with you!

Meet Iyah May.

She is an Australian based singer who just lost a contract with her management company because she refused to change these lyrics.

It’s amazing!

Here’s the full screen video of that same clip shared above for easier viewing.

And if you think there’s just a few seconds worth of gold, you’re wrong.

The entire song is that good!

Here’s a YouTube Short that Ayah uploaded thanking her supporters for sticking with her after her management dropped her.

The song that turned out to be Iyah’s “rubicon” moment isn’t the usual pop ballad.

In fact, there is very little about pop culture and the trauma the entire world seems to be enduring at the moment that didn’t find its way into Iyah’s edgy lyrics — and she rips almost ALL THE NARRATIVES at the same time!

Like a good comedian, she skewers polarization itself. Nothing is off limits. And somehow, that is the very thing that seems to give her a universal voice.

There is no “manufactured outrage” in Iyah’s lyrics — but a genuine outcry against all the things that so many of us are dealing with.

Here’s some background according to a story in AmpAmerica:

In just a few words, Iyah May skewers the polarization that defines today’s culture, where manufactured outrage over divisive issues drowns out the cries of millions suffering from real problems. Her critique of Big Pharma’s pandemic profits is equally scathing: “Man-made virus watch the millions die / Biggest profit of their lives.”

Her manager’s decision to sever ties is a disappointing, albeit predictable, response in an industry that often values marketability over integrity. But Iyah May’s refusal to compromise her vision is a powerful statement. She’s standing up not just for herself, but for every artist who’s been told to “play it safe.”

In a world where cancel culture silences dissent and media manipulation distorts reality, we need voices like Iyah May’s more than ever. “Karmageddon” isn’t just a song—it’s a battle cry against complacency. By staying true to her art, Iyah May reminds us all that real change starts when we refuse to bow to fear. Here’s hoping more artists find the courage to follow her lead.
In a world full of complacency and the overwhelm of information overload, somehow, Iyah cuts right through to the core problem: the demand to conform.

Conform to the outrage, and choose your “group”.

I think that’s what might be the most powerful aspect overall of this song, and her hauntingly clear lyrics.

It’s a call to REFUSE to accept whatever narrative is being pushed, and to THINK FOR YOURSELF.

That’s not just a good song, if you ask me — that’s a war cry, if I’ve ever heard one.

Iyah changed the name she performed music under in 2020, but put her music on hold while she filled in as a “relief” doctor while Covid was in full bloom, according to an old story on ToneDeaf:

While studying to become a doctor, iyah may – formerly known as Mayah – decided to take a bold leap and pursue her musical dreams. She moved to New York City on just her student loan and met a community that inspired her and made her realize that her decision was correct.

Then COVID-19 happened: the global pandemic necessitated a return to medicine, her planned music releases put on hold for a better cause.

I actually changed my artist name to iyah may in 2020. I put my music releases on pause and returned to medicine to fill in during the pandemic as kind of like a ‘relief’ doctor in hospitals / virus clinics. The name ‘iyah’ is close to my heart and came about after this year of reflecting, writing and collaborating with some really rad people. ‘
Here’s the full lyric video Iyah uploaded to her YouTube channel a few days ago.

On one hand, her manager made likely the biggest mistake of his career — if I’m reading the tea leaves correctly.

On the other hand… how else does a lyricist with a rebellious streak break out and make her way onto the scene except by bucking the system?
