Canadian Football League linebacker Jayden Dalke was killed Saturday night in a head-on crash that also took the life of a 22-year-old driver in Saskatchewan, authorities said.
Dalke, 30, a Saskatchewan Roughriders captain, was driving the wrong way on Highway 11 near Lumsden when his silver SUV collided with a vehicle driven by Bhishma Rajyaguru of Regina, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
Both men died at the scene.
The crash happened around 9 p.m. after police received a report about 30 minutes earlier that a silver SUV had left a gas station without paying for fuel.
RCMP said the same SUV was later involved in the fatal crash.
Dalke was returning to Regina after spending the Roughriders’ bye week in Leduc, Alberta, his hometown.
Police said alcohol and cannabis were found in Dalke’s vehicle.
Authorities have not said whether impairment played a role in the crash.
The deadly wreck left the Roughriders and the wider CFL community mourning Dalke while also raising painful questions about the moments before the collision.
The league released a statement Monday remembering Dalke’s impact on and off the field.
“It is with tremendous sadness that we share the tragic news of Jayden’s passing,” the league said in a statement on Monday. “He was a passionate competitor who played with incredible heart. Off the field, he will be remembered for his leadership in the locker room and his dedication to the community. The CFL has lost a teammate, a Canadian brother and a friend. On behalf of the Board of Governors, our CFL family and the entire Canadian football community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Jayden’s family, friends, the Saskatchewan Roughriders organization and all those whose lives were bettered through knowing him.”
Dalke was drafted by Saskatchewan in the sixth round of the 2022 CFL Canadian Draft out of the University of Alberta.
He was selected 54th overall.
Dalke later became part of the Roughriders’ 2025 Grey Cup-winning team, which delivered the fifth championship in franchise history.
The team remembered him as a player who embodied the franchise.

“A relentless warrior on the field, Jayden’s determination, toughness and work ethic inspired his teammates, who cared deeply for him and are heartbroken by his passing,” the team shared in a statement. “On and off the field, he was the true definition of what it means to be a Saskatchewan Roughrider.
“Our hearts go out to the entire Dalke family, who travelled the country to watch Jayden live his dream. We will miss him terribly and will never forget the impact he had on our lives and our team.”
The Roughriders displayed a tribute to Dalke at Mosaic Stadium during practice Monday as teammates processed the sudden loss.
But the tragedy is not limited to the football world.
Rajyaguru, the other driver killed in the crash, was just 22 years old.
His death has become part of the grim reality of a wreck that started with a wrong-way vehicle and ended with two families shattered.
Dalke’s career will be remembered by fans and teammates who saw his grit on the field.
The crash investigation will now focus on how a professional athlete’s SUV ended up heading the wrong way on a divided highway before a collision that no one walked away from.
