John Thune Responds to Mounting Pressure to Cancel August Recess Until SAVE America Act Passes

President Trump does not want Senators heading to vacation while the SAVE America Act is still in limbo.

We have less than two weeks before the Senate is scheduled to break for their annual, five-week August recess — and, they’ve still got a lot on their plate.

But, the most important thing on the agenda is President Trump’s election security measure. He has made it very clear that he wants the SAVE America passed — no matter what.

So, in a post on Truth Social, President Trump outright demanded that Senate Majority Leader John Thune cancel the upcoming recess until the SAVE America Act is passed.

Read his full post here:

Full text:

John Thune should not allow the United States Senate to “leave town” until it passes The Save America Act or, far better still, TERMINATES THE FILIBUSTER, where Republicans can then quickly pass everything they ever dreamed of, including a full and deep throated SAVE AMERICA ACT, the Budget, and the ever looming Debt Ceiling disaster, 1929! The Dumocrats will do it on day one, and can’t believe how lucky they got with this Senate leadership. Remember, stupidity always brings LOSING & DEATH! President DJT

President Trump isn’t the only one ramping up pressure on Sen. Thune to forgo the Senate’s vacation in order to get this crucial piece of legislation approved.

Multiple Senators are rallying behind President Trump and have announced that they will object to Thune calling for recess.

Fox News reported:

Sens. Mike Lee, R-Utah, Rick Scott, R-Fla., and Ashley Moody, R-Fla., have all announced their intent online to object to Thune calling for recess toward the end of this work period.

“I hereby object to any effort to put the Senate into recess in August — at least until such time as the Senate has passed the SAVE America Act — and hereby request a roll call vote,” Lee said on X.

“Do not assume you have my consent,” he continued. “You do not.”

Typically, recess or state work periods are a consent exercise in the Senate, meaning that all lawmakers agree to skip town and head back to their states to do work on the ground. But a single senator can object on the Senate floor and force a vote to decide whether the upper chamber stays or goes.

Trump and the GOP trio’s demands come at an inflection point in the Senate.

And, the number of Senators objecting to the August recess is only growing.

The late Sen. Lindsey Graham’s sister Darline just became the latest to join them.

She stated in a post on X:

President Trump is 100% correct. The SAVE America Act is top priority. I will stay here as long as necessary to get it passed and signed into law.

Yet, despite all of this pressure from the president of the United States and his own colleagues, Sen. Thune is remaining defiant.

The Hill shared his response to the growing pressure to cancel the Senate’s vacation:

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) on Monday reacted cooly to President Trump’s demand for the chamber to cancel its five-week August recess to debate the SAVE America Act, telling reporters he’s willing to do so if there’s a chance of a successful outcome but warning of wasting senators’ time with unproductive procedural votes.

Thune also acknowledged that some GOP colleagues — such as Sens. Susan Collin (R-Maine), Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) and Jon Husted (R-Ohio) — could benefit from returning home to campaign ahead of the Nov. 3 election.

“Ahhh, do you guys want to be here in August? What do you think?” Thune quipped to the Capitol press corps as he walked into the Senate on Monday afternoon, implying that most denizens of Congress’s historic halls are ready for a recess after months of grueling session.

Thune then noted that the Senate has debated the election reform bill, which would require people to show proof of citizenship when registering to vote and photo identification to vote, for weeks already this year without a winning result.

“If I thought there was a path for getting a result, I’m all for it. I’m a cosponsor of the SAVE Act. We voted on it two, three, four, five times already. We had it up on the floor for an extended period of time,” he said.

“Show me how this ends. What’s the picture of victory at the end?” he said.

Absolutely shameful.

What do you think?

Should Thune be forced to skip the Senate’s August recess in order to get the SAVE America Act done?
