A Michigan father is believed to have shot and killed his wife and six children before setting their Grand Haven Township home on fire in what investigators are calling a murder-suicide.

Officials identified the adults as Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, and Amanda Karolkiewicz, 39. The children — four boys ages 15, 12, 11, and 5, and two girls both age 11 — were all found dead inside the burning home Friday morning. Two of the children were adopted. All eight had gunshot wounds.

Authorities say Kristopher is believed to be the suspect. The family’s pets also perished in the fire. No additional suspects are being sought.

Amanda “Mandy” Karolkiewicz, 39, was the kind of substitute teacher everyone loved: full of heart, always willing to help, the kind of woman who poured everything into her work. She lived in a beautiful 5-bedroom home in Grand Haven Township, Michigan, with her husband Kristopher, 47, and their five kids – ages 5 to 15.
Early this morning, what was supposed to be an ordinary house fire became something far darker. Suspicious. Possible homicide-suicide.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating, but the pain in the community is already unbearable. Amanda’s parents, Steve and Becky Lawwill, just posted on Facebook begging for answers and holding on to hope.
School officials are grieving too — she was beloved by every student and colleague who crossed her path.
The world needs to know what happened to this family.
Rest in peace, Mandy, Kristopher, and all the beautiful children who never got to grow up.

Meanwhile, her husband, Kristopher, presumably stayed back in the States with their other four children.

It appears Mandy and the girls returned home around July 18th. Just days later, on July 24th… the family of eight was found dead. Several of them had gunshot wounds.

Speaking to the press Monday, Capt. Jacob Sparks said that authorities had not discovered a note from Kristopher, according to WOOD. However, investigators had assembled “a lot of documentation.”

“This is an unspeakable tragedy that we may never completely understand why it happened. But we will do our best to find the answers and to honor the memory of those victims,” Sparks said at the event.

Sparks said that the investigation into the situation would take time and added that the sheriff’s department was “trying to get answers” for everyone who knew and cared about the family. “And the only way to get those answers is to do a full, fair, thorough, detailed, complete investigation,” he said.

During the press conference, Sparks noted that investigators were trying to determine a timeline of events, saying, “We believe this incident could’ve started the night before and then carried over into the early morning hours. There were reports of the smell of smoke early in the morning,” per The Detroit News.

The Sentinel found and independently confirmed the authenticity of the account on Monday by matching details about the couple’s marriage dates, ages, children, occupations and residence.

Across dozens of posts written roughly two years ago, the username “MandyK1179” provides a glimpse into her life in Grand Haven, Michigan — a then-aspiring teacher with six children who enjoyed dining at Noto’s and The Village Baker, visiting the Tri-Cities Museum and shopping in downtown Grand Haven and Holland.

“I grew up in Metro Detroit, now I’m in a small beach town in West Michigan,” she wrote in 2024 on Reddit. “It’s like living in a Hallmark Movie.”

In other posts, though, the picture is less pretty.

In a thread posted in 2024, she describes meeting her husband when she was an intern.

“He was divorced and older than me … fast forward ten years and five kids, he was cheating with the intern again — the same age I was when I was the intern,” Karolkiewicz wrote.

“After about a year of self-loathing, I remember crying and looking at myself in the mirror and realizing how (expletive) it was that I was the one who was living so miserably because of what he did. I finally realized that I had been the only person who has ever showed up for myself my whole entire life.”

Karolkiewicz wrote she wouldn’t have worked toward reconciliation with her husband if not for the couple’s six children, four biological and two adopted.

“I kept telling myself, ‘I love my kids more than I hate my husband right now.’ They have no idea — I faked it ’till we made it. We’re in a much better place 4.5 years out, but it’s still a fight to stay in a healthy place.

In one of her first posts in the subreddit “As One After Infidelity” — a peer support group for reconciliation after cheating — she shared red flags in her marriage.

“We have six kids, so the idea of leaving is insanely terrifying,” she wrote in 2024 on Reddit. “He’s always had major red flags that I ignored due to my own trauma and anxious attachment. He was raised in a toxic family dynamic that encouraged lying about everything.

“… After the most recent incident of catching him being sneaky, I insisted he go back to (independent counseling) and we attempt (marriage counseling) for the first time. It’s all so confusing, because our day-to-day lives and dynamics are truly good, until every so often now when he pulls sneaky (expletive).”

Karolkiewicz wrote about the decision to cut extended family from their lives to protect their mental health, and the time she shoved her husband after learning of his “emotional” affair.

“I don’t feel bad still,” she commented in 2024 on Reddit. “He towers over me and destroyed me mentally. It felt like I was being assaulted and needed to fight back. I think it’s a fight or flight thing.”

Karolkiewicz also shared the couple’s experience in therapy and sobriety.

“I stopped drinking when I started therapy,” she wrote. “I decided if I was gonna work through things I should work through them without having something to numb discomfort. Physically, I consistently felt so much healthier without it, so I decided to keep at it — almost two years later.”
