An extremist seeking the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate from Michigan has quipped about putting an opponent’s head “on a pike,” and is getting backlash for the bloody rhetoric.
“That is what passes for moderate in this day of rage,” charged constitutional expert Jonathan Turley.
A Politico report said it is Abdul El-Sayed who turned to an agenda of such extreme violence.
“Ideally, you put on ogre on a pike, and then everyone else gets the message,” he insisted.

Explained Turley, the comment was a topic during a debate with Rep. Haley Stevens, a Michigan Democrat.
And then El-Sayed insisted that his remark was about Sen. John Fetterman, D-N.J.
“Somehow, alluding to the beheading of a staunch defender of Israel was presented as far more reasonable than mass beheadings,” Turley said.
Politico reported on the backlash even from Democrats.
El-Sayed’s full comment was, “If I win … well y’all came at me so now I get to come at you, and you know, primarying people like John Fetterman, I have no problem to do that. Ideally you put one ogre on a pike, and then everyone else gets the message, and all of a sudden starts to sound a lot different.”
He insisted he could provide a big push to the ultra-progressives in the Democrat party.
Moms Demand Action spokeswoman Shannon Watts pointed out he wasn’t referencing Republicans.
And Fred Guttenberg, a gun control activist, said, “That is what Abdul El-Sayed and his DSA movement think of Democrats and the party.”
Speaking “metaphorically,” was El-Sayed’s campaign explanation.
“Michigan Islamist discusses beheading his opponents,” said Steve Guest, a former staffer for Sen. Ted Cruz, on X.
Turley explained, “Nothing says commitment to reform like heads on pikes.”
“There is an increasing level of violent rhetoric coming from the left and an increasing level of political violence,” he explained. “It was a scene that has recurred throughout history, as establishment leaders are overtaken by the very mobs they sought to use for their own purposes. Of course, the pike was the enduring symbol of the Jacobins during ‘the Terror’ of the French Revolution. It is now an image being picked up, with the guillotine, by the New Jacobins.”
He noted such rage rhetoric has appeared in speeches by other Democrats.
It was, he wrote, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, “who yelled threats at conservative Supreme Court justices in front of the court. A deranged man triggered by such rhetoric in the media later attempted to assassinate Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Schumer and others portrayed their opponents as Nazis who threaten the very existence of democracy, and they stoked class conflict to inspire resentment for the wealthy.”
And former Democratic National Committee deputy chair Keith Ellison — now Minnesota’s attorney general — celebrated that Antifa would “strike fear in the heart” of Trump and his supporters, he said.
“Pandering to the mob will not help,” Turley warned, as those advocating such radicalism already are being targeted by those further extreme.
“The posturing as class warriors will not satisfy these extremists for long, as many clamor for radical changes, including trashing the Constitution and our core institutions. The Michigan primary is an example of how the mob gravitates to the most extreme figures in a race to the bottom. El-Sayed is the rock bottom of rage.”
