President Trump Arrives at Capitol Hill to Pay Respects to Jimmy Carter, Meet with GOP Senators

President Trump is busy today at the U.S Capitol.

First, he and Melania paid their respects to Jimmy Carter, who is currently laying in state.

But, his visit to the U.S. Capitol had another purpose as well.

President Trump was also meeting with GOP senators in order to give them directive as to what they need to get ready for in the first few months of his second term.

The New York Post reported on President Trump’s visit to the Capitol:

President-elect Donald Trump and his wife Melania honored the late President Jimmy Carter on Wednesday before huddling with Senate Republicans for a wide-ranging discussion on his legislative priorities in the first 100 days — including border security and energy reforms.

“It feels great,” a beaming Trump told reporters about his return to the legislative complex. “We’re going to get the results, and we’re going to make America great again.”

The first couple then proceeded to the Capitol Rotunda, pausing solemnly for about a minute in front of the 39th president’s casket.

Carter — whom Trump fiercely admonished in the past but recently praised for having done “everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans” — died on Dec. 29. He was 100 years old.

Senate Republicans later erupted in applause as the once and future commander-in-chief joined them to begin deliberations about his second administration’s agenda.

Fox News added more:

President-elect Trump arrived at the Capitol on Wednesday to meet with Republicans in the Senate as he prepares to take office again at the end of the month and hit the ground running on his agenda.

He entered the building with his wife, Melania, around 5:30 p.m.

The Trump transition team initially confirmed the meeting was happening with the Senate GOP, who are now in control of the upper chamber, to Fox News Digital.

The president-elect is being hosted for the huddle by the chairwoman of the Senate Republican Policy Committee, Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., her office said.

Trump is in Washington, D.C., this week for the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away this month at 100 years old after being in hospice care.

The meeting, which will include Senate Republican leadership, among others, is being held in the Mansfield room of the Capitol at 6 p.m. The room is used for weekly Senate caucus lunches and other large meetings.

Earlier today, a man was arrested for wielding a machete at the Capitol — just hours before President Trump was scheduled to arrive and honor the life of Jimmy Carter.

Despite this threat, President Trump didn't let it stop him from making sure the GOP is ready to go on Day One.
