Pro-abortion activists are applauding New York City for a plan being implemented that would make it the first city to pay directly for abortions.
Under the new policy, the city would set aside $250,000 for a special account that would fund abortions for women who can't afford to pay for the controversial operation themselves.
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and City Council Speaker Corey Johnson announced on Friday the plan to include the policy in the budget.
The money would go to New York Abortion Access Fund, which celebrated the development on their Facebook page Friday.
Mayor De Blasio also praised the plan in a statement Friday.
"We understand that there are women who need help and are having trouble getting the help they need," he said, "and the city had an opportunity here to step up."
Supporters of the plan say that this could be a remedy to women in other states who have passed restrictions on abortion.
"No matter where you live or how much money you make, New York City is here for you," said National Institute for Reproductive Health Action Fund president Andrea Miller.
The New York City council is expected to vote on the budget next week.
