Massive Protests ERUPT In Minneapolis Following ICE Shooting

Hopefully, these protests don’t lead to mass riots, as seen in 2020 during the “Summer of Love.”

A massive number of protesters are gathering in the streets of Minnesota after an ICE agent shot and killed a woman who hit an agent with her vehicle.

The New York Times said over a thousand have gathered in Minneapolis:

On an unusually warm January night in Minneapolis, thousands have gathered at a vigil for the victim to protest the federal immigration crackdown.

People are demonstrating peacefully but angrily, with candles and signs that read “ICE Go Home” and “Minnesota Doesn’t Need More ICE.”

ABC 7 NY reported that protests have occurred in New York City, too:

A protest against ICE, stemming from the deadly shooting in Minneapolis, took place in Manhattan on Wednesday night.

Demonstrators filled Foley Square for what immigration advocates in the city called an emergency rally in response to the incident in Minneapolis, then marched to the doorstep of 26 Federal Plaza, the Department of Homeland Security headquarters in New York.

Protesters chanted “Renee Nicole Good,” the name of the American citizen Minneapolis City Council says was killed by an ICE agent.

“Are we outraged enough? No! We’re not. We must be must more outraged than we already are. We haven’t begun to scratch the surface of how outraged we must be,” said Angelo Pinto of Until Freedom.

“What happened today was a tragedy and I think one of the most tragic parts was that I was not shocked to see the headline,” said Hannah Strauss of Hands Off NYC. “That they have normalized this. It is just a continuation in the escalation of the force that they are using against the communities that they claim to protect.”

Reaction from local leaders also poured following the deadly shooting, with all eyes on Mayor Zohran Mamdani who campaigned to uphold sanctuary city laws and not cooperate with ICE.

The mayor spoke out about the shooting on Wednesday evening.

“The news coming out of Minneapolis is horrific. This is one part that has been a year full of cruelty, and we know that when ICE agents attack immigrants, they attack every one of us across this country,” he said. “This is a city and will always be a city that stands up for immigrants across the five boroughs. I have made it clear to everyone in my city government, and that includes NYPD that we are going to uphold sanctuary city policies. We are going to adhere to them.”
