Former Rep. Abigail Spanberger is projected to become Virginia’s next governor.

NBC News also projected Spanberger to defeat Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears.

Spanberger, a former congresswoman, won the race in the blue-leaning state after holding polling and fundraising advantages throughout the campaign. Her victory provides Democrats with a shot of momentum as the party attempts to chart their path forward after their 2024 election defeat.

Virginia was one of two states, along with New Jersey, that held the first governor’s races of President Donald Trump’s second term.

Spanberger, 47, centered her campaign heavily on economic and affordability issues, as well public safety and her support for abortion rights. Spanberger’s campaign and allied groups attacked Earle-Sears over her conservative record on social issues and her fealty to Trump.

Earle-Sears, 61, struggled throughout much of the race to find a coherent message. She attempted to emphasize the accomplishments of GOP Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s administration, telling voters that electing her would mark a continuation of his record, including growing the private sector of the economy and standing up for “parents’ rights” in schools. In the race’s final weeks, she crafted a “commonsense” theme that seemed intended to mimic parts of Youngkin’s winning formula in 2021.

In related news, Virginia state Sen. Ghazala Hashmi is projected to become the state’s next lieutenant governor.

She would become the first Muslim woman elected to a statewide office in United States history with the victory.

The Hill noted:

Spanberger also touted her background as a former intelligence officer. Her closing ad also touted her law enforcement and public service experience.

“I followed my parents into public service. My mom was a nurse, my dad worked in federal law enforcement, and I did too — going after drug rings and child abusers, and then at CIA, terrorists,” she said in the ad.

But the campaign cycle was not without its challenges for Spanberger. The Democratic ticket was roiled last month when texts sent by Democratic attorney general nominee Jay Jones in 2022 surfaced, in which Jones openly talked about shooting then-Virginia state House Speaker Todd Gilbert (R).

While Spanberger swiftly condemned the texts and said she conveyed her “disgust” with Jones, Republicans, including Trump and Earle-Sears, used the scandal to attack her.

Earle-Sears brought up the scandal on stage during the first and only gubernatorial debate.

Spanberger largely kept her distance from Jones for the remainder of the campaign. While polling significantly narrowed in the attorney general race, Spanberger consistently maintained a wide lead over Earle-Sears.
