Israel Deports Greta Thunberg, Here’s Where

The Global Sumud Flotilla announced that Swedish activist Greta Thunberg would be deported to Greece.

Thunberg is among over 70 people of different nationalities scheduled to leave Israel on Monday after they were seized aboard the flotilla.

Most of them will be flown to Greece so they can get flights to their home countries.

Those flying out of Israel on Monday include 28 French citizens, 27 Greeks, 15 Italians, and nine Swedes.

Twenty-one Spaniards separately returned to Spain on Sunday from Israel.

The release still leaves several foreigners in Israeli custody, including 28 Spanish nationals.

All had been on board the 42-vessel Global Sumud Flotilla carrying activists and politicians, who had been aiming to break an Israeli blockade on Gaza designed to prevent Hamas from importing weapons. The flotilla activists said they were carrying a symbolic quantity of humanitarian aid for Gaza — where the United Nations says famine has taken hold; a charge that Israel rejects — and refused Israel’s invitation to dock their vessels at an Israeli port, from where the aid would be transferred over land to Gaza.

Footage showed a large crowd waiting for Greek members of the flotilla to arrive in Athens.

The Guardian shared further info:

Israeli forces intercepted all the boats of the Global Sumud flotilla (GSF), carrying more than 400 people including parliamentarians and the environmental campaigner Greta Thunberg, last week. Most of the people were held at Ketziot, a high-security prison in the Negev desert used primarily to detain Palestinians whom Israel accuses of involvement in terrorist activities.

Israel’s foreign ministry has dismissed all claims of mistreatment of members of the flotilla as “brazen lies”, posting on X on Sunday evening: “All the detainees’ legal rights are fully upheld.”

The national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, has said he was “proud” of the way staff behaved at Ketziot. He said in a statement on the activists: “They should get a good feel for the conditions in Ketziot prison and think twice before they approach Israel again.”
