Residents of Lafayette, Indiana, are on edge.

An Indiana judge and his wife, who reside in Lafayette, were shot inside their home in broad daylight on Sunday.

According to authorities, a shooter opened fire on Judge Steven Mayer and his wife on Sunday afternoon and is still currently on the run.

Fox News broke the story of the shooting and had these details to report on the current status of Judge Mayer and his wife:

A judge and his wife were injured in a shooting Sunday afternoon in Lafayette, Indiana, prompting a multi-agency investigation involving local, state and federal law enforcement.

The Lafayette Police Department said Judge Steven Meyer was shot in the arm and his wife, Kimberly Meyer, was shot in the hip at their home on Mill Pond Lane at about 2:15 p.m.

Police said shell casings were recovered at the scene and both victims received medical treatment and are listed in stable condition.

The shooting remains an active investigation involving multiple agencies, including the Lafayette Police Department, Indiana State Police, the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office, the West Lafayette Police Department, the Tippecanoe County Prosecutor’s Office and the FBI.

Kimberly Meyer released a statement through police thanking investigators and first responders following the shooting.

“I have great confidence in the Lafayette Police Department’s investigation and want to thank all the agencies involved for their work,” she said. “We are also incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from the community; everyone has been so kind and compassionate.

Indiana Chief Justice Loretta Rush released the following statement:

Tippecanoe Superior Court 2 Judge Steve Meyer is a fellow judge and a longtime friend. I am deeply grateful he and his wife Kim are alive after having been shot in their home. Their health and well-being are of utmost concern to me.

As of the sending of this message, the shooter is purportedly still at large. Please be in contact with your local sheriff.

I worry about the safety of all our judges. As you work to peacefully resolve more than 1 million cases a year, you must not only feel safe, you must also be safe. Any violence against a judge or a judge’s family is completely unacceptable. As public servants, you are dedicated to the rule of law.

I know you join me in praying for Steve and Kim and their speedy recovery. Meantime, please remain vigilant in your own security.

Loretta H. Rush
