HORRIFYING: Boy Dies After Being Taken From Father, Left In Hot Car By Child Services

This is simultaneously tragic and infuriating.

A 3-year-old boy sadly died after being abandoned by a Child Services worker in a hot car for several hours.

This poor child.

Ke’Torrius “KJ” Starks Jr. had been taken from his family and was in foster care.

People reported:

KJ, who was from Bessemer, Ala., had been put in the temporary custody of the state due to allegations of drug use in his home, an attorney for his parents tells PEOPLE.

The lawyer, Courtney French, says he doesn’t know when the boy was first placed with DHR.

However, his dad had a court-ordered supervised visit with him, so an Alabama DHR worker picked him up from daycare and took him to the visit.

After it was over, the worker was supposed to take KJ back to daycare.

But instead, she left him in a hot car while they ran errands.

For five hours. In the sweltering Alabama heat.

Let that sink in: the government workers who were supposed to care for and protect this child instead ended up killing him.

The New York Post has more details on the horrifying incident:

Ke’Torrius Starks Jr., who had been living in temporary foster care, was left in the Department of Human Resources worker’s car in Birmingham for five hours Tuesday as temperatures soared to 108 degrees, AL.com reported.

“This is a parent’s worst nightmare,” the child’s parents said in a statement. “Our baby should be alive.”

The tragedy unfolded after the child’s foster family had dropped him off at daycare at 9 a.m. so a DHR worker — who was contracted by a third party — could pick him up for a scheduled visit with his biological father, authorities said.

When the supervised visit ended around 11:30 a.m., the worker allegedly stopped to pick up food for her family and popped into a tobacco store instead of returning him to the daycare facility as planned.

The worker then allegedly went to their own home, where the boy was left alone in the car — with the windows rolled up — from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., authorities said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene just after 6 p.m.

The boy’s body was discovered when his foster parent arrived at the daycare to find he was not there.

According to Ketorrius’s aunt, Brittney Debruce, the boy is in DHR custody and lives in a foster home.

When the foster parent went to pick the child up from daycare, he was not there, Debruce said.

Debruce said a transport driver – possibly from a company that contracts with DHR for transporting children to visitations – picked up Keterriuos to take him to DHR in Bessemer for a scheduled visit with his father.

When that visit was over, she said, Ketorrius was never returned to daycare.

Debruce said Birmingham police found her nephew inside the car. They and DHR then notified Debruce’s sister that the child had died.

The parents and other family members are beyond distraught.

“We don’t know what’s going on,” Debruce said.

The Alabama Department of Human Resources provided this statement to AL.com:

“A child in DHR custody was being transported by a contract provider when the incident occurred. The provider has terminated their employee. Due to confidentiality, DHR cannot comment further regarding the identity of the child or the exact circumstances.”

The death is under investigation by Birmingham police.

This child services lady should not just be fired from her job, she needs to be prosecuted for child abuse.

What she did is absolutely disgusting.

I can’t imagine leaving anybody’s child in a hot car for five hours in 108+ degree weather.

Please pray for justice and for the family of this poor child who suffered at the hands of the system.
