There are heroes always surrounding us if you look closely enough.

An Army football player rescued a man in upstate New York from a fiery car wreck over Labor Day weekend.

Larry Pickett Jr., who plays safety for the Army football team, carried a man outside of his burning vehicle and into safety.

Pickett’s father also assisted in the rescue effort.

NBC News reported more details on Pickett and his father’s heroic actions:

A college football player and his father made a lifesaving play over the weekend when their family drove by a fiery car wreck in upstate New York.

Larry Pickett Jr., a safety for the U.S. Military Academy’s football team, and his father pulled a man out of his car as flames were burning the white sedan, according to video posted to social media by his father. Larry Pickett Sr. credited his son for the save in a post on Instagram, though they both appeared to have carried the man.

“Just after Midnight, I watched in awe as my son, Larry Pickett Jr., ran toward a burning vehicle, ignoring the downed power lines crackling around it,” he wrote on Sunday. “With immense courage, he pulled a man to safety, saving him from a fiery fate.”

The Fort Montgomery Fire Department posted images of the scene to Facebook on Sunday, saying it responded to an accident where a car “struck a utility pole and became fully engulfed in flames.”

The family was driving back to West Point following a family dinner on Saturday night in New York City, according to The Associated Press. They were in town to watch the first Army football game of the season, a loss against Tarleton State.

Video shared by the family shows a car crashed into a tree on the side of a road. A thin wooden pole, possibly the utility pole, appeared to have crushed the top of the car.

ESPN reported how Army officials responded to Pickett’s actions:

Pickett Sr. told WTVD-TV in their hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina, that his son “mentioned his military training kicked in” and “jumped right into action.”

“Honestly it wasn’t too much thinking that went in to it,” Pickett Jr. said in an interview with ABC News. “We just, like I said, we saw that there’s a car that crashed, somebody who needed our help and without thinking we just reacted and went and helped as best as we could.”

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll commended Pickett Jr. in a social media post, saying the 20-year-old “embodies the highest values of the Army and West Point: duty, honor, country.”

“He showed that he can stand ready to act under pressure, whether on the football field, in his community, or in the future with the Soldiers under his command,” Driscoll wrote. “We are proud — and deeply grateful — for his heroism.”

On X, formerly known as Twitter, the U.S. Military Academy wrote: “We’re proud of the heroic actions taken Saturday night by Cadet Larry Pickett Jr” and his father. Their actions, the academy said, are “the embodiment” of U.S. Army values.

Army Athletic Director Tom Theodorakis wrote on X that the Picketts’ conduct is “exactly what we strive to develop … leadership, courage, and selfless service.”

“Cadet Larry Pickett Jr. and his father exemplify the values we hold dear, stepping up in a moment of crisis to save a life,” Theodorakis wrote. “Proud to see these traits in action, on and off the fields of friendly strife. Count the brave.”
