Gun Manufacturing: Is the U.S. Still the World Leader?

There are two big powers that people think about when it comes to gun control: America and Russia. Still, while Russia is fairly impressive, America always seemed to have the upper hand in this scenario. America loves guns – and this is known all around the world.

In 2015, more than half of the guns of the entire world were accounted for the United States – or at least that is what the Congressional Research Service shows. The numbers only seem to be growing – and even with the occasional slump, it is hard to say whether America is ready to leave the first place or not.

The American Gun Industry

One could say that the United States is the place where there are more guns than there are actually people. In 2018, there were around 393 million arms owned by civilians – which is actually higher than the number of people residing in the United States.
If every person in the U.S. owned a gun, there would still be around 67 million guns that would be left without owners. It is estimated that there are around 120.5 guns in the United States for every 100 residents – as compared to Yemen, where there are 52.8 guns per 100 people.

America is also at the top of firearm export. At this point, the US accounts for 34 percent of the exported global arms, being at its highest level once more since the late 20th century. The US is currently supplying firearms to a great number of countries – and all of them are more than ready to purchase from the U.S. It is estimated that the gun sales in the U.S. are 58% higher than they are in Russia. As the exports of the U.S. armies grew by 25 percent in the last few years, Russia went down by 7.1 percent.
These numbers grew even higher with the war outbreaks in Syria, Saudi Arabia, and so on. Arm imports in Yemen, for example, have doubled over the past ten years – particularly since 2015, when the civil war in Yemen started. The export in air rifles also began, as it was discovered that they can be high powered and efficient.

Competition from the World

We have established that the U.S. is receiving a lot of competition from Russia – but that is not the only opposing force. The United States is also getting a lot of opposing competition from China – whose exports rose by 38 percent over the last few years.
It is believed that China has the second-largest budget for defense after the United States – and while it might not be enough to overpower the Americans, it is still uncertain how it’s going to be in the future. The same thing applies to France, as it is slowly gaining power.

At this point, one could still say that the United States is the world leader when it comes to guns – but this does not mean that it doesn’t have any competition. Even so, the chances of losing their crown anytime soon are relatively low, considering their boom in gun revenue.
