Klaus Schwab, founder of the World Economic Forum, has informed staff and trustees that he will step down as chairman.

His decision follows a board investigation into workplace culture at the influential Davos organization.

Reuters confirmed:

The World Economic Forum founder Klaus Schwab, will “start the process” of stepping down as chair of its board of trustees, a spokesperson for the Geneva-based institution told Reuters on Thursday.
Schwab said the forum, which convenes annual gatherings in the Swiss resort of Davos, must recover its “sense of mission” after a period of turmoil, the Financial Times first reported, citing a letter to trustee board members and confirmation by two people with knowledge of the situation.
He did not give a timeline for his departure from the organisation, but the WEF said in a statement to the FT that the process should be completed by January 2027.
Schwab will remain in this role until a successor is appointed, the WEF spokesperson told Reuters, without providing a timeline.

World Economic Forum founder Klaus Schwab told the staff and the board of trustees that he will step down as chairman, in the wake of a board investigation into the Davos organizer’s workplace culture.

Schwab, who created the Davos gathering and led the Forum for five decades, told trustees this week that he will start the process of stepping down. Last May, he stepped aside as the Forum’s executive chairman, but stayed as nonexecutive chair.

Schwab didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment about the decision, which was earlier reported by the Financial Times.

In recent weeks, the Forum has been shaking up its leadership after the board received the findings of an investigation into the organization’s workplace culture. The investigation was prompted by a Wall Street Journal article last year that revealed allegations by employees of discrimination against women and Black people at the Forum, which is based in Geneva.

The Forum disputed the Journal’s reporting, and Schwab denied the allegations against him. In a recent memo, Børge Brende, the Forum’s CEO, said the Forum would take steps to address leadership issues identified by the probe and that the investigation didn’t substantiate the allegations against its founder.

A Forum spokesman said the organization is starting a search for a new chair and expects the succession process will be completed by January 2027.

However, after everything Klaus Schwab has done, he shouldn’t just be allowed to fade away into a cozy retirement.
