The Trump Administration has announced an ‘historic’ settlement against retail shipping giant Amazon.
At a whopping $2.5 BILLION, the judgement against Jeff Bezos’ company is the largest settlement of it’s kind — ever.
I know everyone wants to jump straight to HOW TO GET YOUR PORTION, so I’ll let you in on the end of the story right up front.
For the most part, the settlement refunds will happen AUTOMATICALLY.
There are a few more details to cover, because I don’t want you to miss out on your portion of this judgement if you’re eligible!
But first, let’s cover exactly what led up to this settlement to begin with, and why it’s such a big story.
Amazon was charged by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) of deceptively eliciting subscriptions in order to get customers to sign up for Amazon Prime.
And then likewise making it incredibly hard and confusing to CANCEL the subscription.
Is it just me, or has DECEPTION become the number one issue facing mankind on a day-to-day basis lately?
FTC Commissioner Mark Meador touted the win on social media on behalf of the Trump Administration, claiming it as a big win for Americans:
The amount determined to make up the refund portion of the settlement actually totals $1.5 Billion.Amazon deceived millions of Americans into signing up for its Prime subscription, charging them fees for something they didn’t want and often didn’t even use.
Every month, Amazon took money from consumers pockets. Now the Trump Administration is putting it back.

And 35 million customers are expected to be eligible to receive a portion of that judgement, as reported by the New York Post:
The FTC announced that the class action suit was successful against Amazon Prime just two days ago in a press release on FTC official website. It’s prime time to get your money back.
Amazon will pay a historic $2.5 billion settlement to customers after the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) accused the e-commerce giant of enrolling site users in the Prime subscription service without their consent — and making it difficult to cancel.
“Today, we are putting billions of dollars back into Americans’ pockets, and making sure Amazon never does this again,” FTC Chairman Andrew N. Ferguson said in a statement.
The settlement includes a $1 billion civil penalty and $1.5 billion in refunds to affected customers — making it the FTC’s largest-ever settlement and the second-highest refund award in history.
The FTC revealed that Amazon used “sophisticated subscription traps” to trick shoppers into signing up for Prime. This allegedly involved deceptive enrollment practices and hard-to-find cancellation options, impacting an estimated 35 million customers during the time period.
Not only was Amazon held responsible for deceptive business practices, but two company Executives were also named in the suit, as the FTC press release detailed:
For those who prefer a video report, here’s a great breakdown from FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson. The Federal Trade Commission has secured a historic order with Amazon.com, Inc., as well as Senior Vice President Neil Lindsay and Vice President Jamil Ghani, settling allegations that Amazon enrolled millions of consumers in Prime subscriptions without their consent, and knowingly made it difficult for consumers to cancel. Amazon will be required to pay a $1 billion civil penalty, provide $1.5 billion in refunds back to consumers harmed by their deceptive Prime enrollment practices, and cease unlawful enrollment and cancellation practices for Prime.
“Today, the Trump-Vance FTC made history and secured a record-breaking, monumental win for the millions of Americans who are tired of deceptive subscriptions that feel impossible to cancel,” said FTC Chairman Andrew N. Ferguson. “The evidence showed that Amazon used sophisticated subscription traps designed to manipulate consumers into enrolling in Prime, and then made it exceedingly hard for consumers to end their subscription. Today, we are putting billions of dollars back into Americans’ pockets, and making sure Amazon never does this again. The Trump-Vance FTC is committed to fighting back when companies try to cheat ordinary Americans out of their hard-earned pay.”
The FTC has charged Amazon and several Amazon executives with knowingly misleading millions of consumers into enrolling in Prime, violating the FTC Act and the Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act (ROSCA).
According to the Chairman, the judgement granted by the judge in this case was EVEN GREATER than the original asking amount!
Here’s that breakdown from Fox Business News and FTC Chairman Ferguson:
Alright — here’s the part everyone has been patiently waiting for.
Here’s the breakdown of everything we know so far on how this refund process is going to play out.
I’ll share my takeaways bullet-point-style down below, but here’s all the nitty-gritty on how this is supposed to go down as reported by CNN:
As promised, here are my takeaways to make sure you don’t miss your refund!Anyone who signed up for Amazon Prime or “unsuccessfully attempted to cancel” their Prime subscription in the United States between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025, is eligible for a share of the settlement.
Customers who used “no more than 3 Prime Benefits” within a year of enrollment and signed up for Amazon Prime through a “challenged enrollment flow” will receive an automatic refund from Amazon.
Automatic payments will be issued first and within 90 days of the FTC order. Those customers will be paid back for up to the total amount of the membership fees they paid, but no more than $51.
Anyone who submits a valid claim to Amazon and is approved will also be paid up to $51.
Claims for unintentional enrollment will be paid after automatic payments are issued, for the total amount of membership fees paid (up to $51) while they had an Amazon Prime subscription.
Prime subscribers who were unable to cancel will be refunded in the next group, for the total amount of membership fees paid, up to $51.
A website with details on the claims process and information about the settlement has not yet been made public.
When it is available, links to the website will be on amazon.com and the Amazon Prime page, or a similar page on the company’s app, according to the FTC’s final order.
The settlement says that within 30 days after Amazon finishes its automatic payments, anyone eligible to submit a claim will be notified by e-mail and mailed letters.
Claims eligible customers will have “up to 180 days after receiving the claims form to submit it to Amazon via electronic mail,” pre-paid mail, or the settlement website, according to the order.
- June 23, 2019 – June 23, 2025 is the window of time during which you had to have signed up, or unsuccessfully tried to cancel your Prime membership.
- You must have used “no more than 3 Prime Benefits” during the following year after enrolling by means of one of several deceptive enrollment pathways.
- Automatic payments will come first for those people, up to but no more than $51.
- If you qualify, but don’t get an automatic payment… you must submit a claim through a specific website.
- That website has not yet been made public, but when it does there will be links on Amazon’s website.
- There will also be emails and snail mail notices sent out a month after the automatic payouts are completed with information on how to submit a claim at that time.
- You’ll have 108 days at that point to submit your claim — so don’t miss it!
In essence, all you have to do is wait, and most people who qualify will receive a refund totaling up to, but no more than, $51.
But keep your eyes open for that email or letter in the mailbox, if you think that you qualify!
The economy is roaring back, but it’s still tough all over, and probably will be for awhile, yet.
But hopefully this little bit of JUSTICE supplied by the Trump Administration will help a little for those of us who experienced exactly the sort of deception and confusing over the last few years dealing with Amazon.
I remember when it became a catchphrase to call out Obama for all sorts of things, whether he was truly responsible for the thing or not — “Thanks, Obama!”
Trust me when I say that I mean this with exactly the OPPOSITE inflection when I say this… fully expecting my settlement refund to show up in the next 90 days:
Thanks, President Trump!
