President Biden’s UN Ambassador, Linda Thomas-Greenfield said Wednesday that “the original sin of slavery weaved white supremacy into our founding documents and principles.”
She made her comments during an interview with the National Action Network, founded by the Rev. Al Sharpton.
Thomas-Greenfield, Joe Biden, and other Democrats joined the group for their annual convention.
Biden UN Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield Says America ‘Must Do Better’
Thomas-Greenfield spoke to the group of the Biden administration’s intent to seek election to the UN Human Rights Council.
In her talk, said America has been an “imperfect union” and has “been since the beginning.”
“Of course, when we raise issues of equity and justice at the global scale, we have to approach them with humility,” she said. “We have to acknowledge that we are an imperfect union and have been since the beginning.”
The UN Ambassador continued, “And every day we strive to make ourselves more perfect and more just. In a diverse country like ours, that means committing to do the work.”
“It means learning and understanding more about each other,” she said.
“It means engaging trailblazing groups like yours to teach, to grow, to include, to improve. It means not forgetting our past or ignoring our present, but keeping both firmly in mind as we push for a better future,” she added.
Thomas-Greenfield then explained her belief that “the original sin of slavery weaved white supremacy into our founding documents and principles.”
“I tried to do this recently in the UN General Assembly when I spoke on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination,” she said. “That day and commemoration was personal for me.”
“So I told the UN some personal stories,” she continued. “I told them how my great-grandmother, Mary Thomas, born in 1865, was the child of a slave, just three generations back from me.”
The diplomat then spoke of her own childhood and experience.
“I grew up in the segregated South; I was bused to a segregated school,” she said. “On weekends, the Klan burned crosses on lawns in our neighborhood.”
She continued, “I shared these stories and others to acknowledge, on the international stage, that I have personally experienced one of America’s greatest imperfections.”
“I’ve seen for myself how the original sin of slavery weaved white supremacy into our founding documents and principles,” Thomas-Greenfield added.
‘Racism Is The Problem Of The Racist’
Thomas-Greenfield continued, “But I also shared these stories to offer up an insight, a simple truth I’ve learned over the years: Racism is not the problem of the person who experiences it.”
“Those of us who experience racism cannot and should not internalize it, despite the impact it can have on our everyday lives,” she said.
“Racism is the problem of the racist,” she added. “And it is the problem of the society that produces the racist.”
“And in today’s word, that’s every society,” the UN Ambassador said.
Thomas-Greenfield’s comments are interesting in that you typically don’t see adherents of Critical Race Theory acknowledge the problems in other countries – typically, they speak as if America is uniquely bad.
It remains to be seen how other countries will react to pressure and criticism from a prospective member of the Human Rights Council that calls itself a racist nation.
Current members of the UN Human Rights Council include China, Cuba, Mexico, Russia, Sudan, Somalia, and Ukraine.
In his comments to the National Action Network, Joe Biden attacked voting law bills, claiming that Jim Crow is alive and well:

Now is the time to support and share the sources you trust.“It’s at a time when the pandemic and the economic crisis continue to devastate Black communities, at a time when the cry for justice for a hundred years in the making is ringing out across our nation,” Biden said.
“At a time when parts of our country are backsliding. The days of Jim Crow, passing laws that harken back to the era of poll taxes, when Black people were made to guess how many beans – how many jelly beans in a jar, or count the number of bubbles in a bar of soap before they could cast their ballot.”
