White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Friday that the Trump administration will proceed with plans to deploy National Guard troops to the Mexican border, even if California refuses to participate.
"Absolutely we will continue moving forward with the other border states," Sanders said at the daily White House press briefing.
"We are going to continue working with California and we are hopeful they will do the right thing and help protect our borders," Sanders said.
A decision to deploy National Guard members was announced Tuesday evening, after President Trump remarked earlier in the day that the military would be deployed.
Sanders stood by Trump's Thursday remarks that there would be between 2,000 and 4,000 National Guard members deployed in participating states.
"It's going to be as many as it takes, we're looking at what that needs to be," she said. "The president thinks it's a good first step to have two to four thousand and if we determine we need more we'll make that decision."
Sanders said "there's not a specific time" for the deployment, but that it will be "as soon as possible."
