Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky set the internet aflame today once again.

Even as President Trump pushes forward to make good on his campaign promise to end the fighting between Ukraine and Russia, Zelensky seems more interested in keeping the fires of war hot than he does in cooling the muzzles of the guns.

Speculation about some secret plan to kill Putin prior to any possible peace deal increased as a result of Zelensky’s strangely timed comments prophesying Putin’s imminent death.

The Ukrainian leader made the comments on French TV, with the Eiffel Tower in the background — shaded by blue and yellow from the Ukrainian flag, of course.

Here’s the clip going viral online, with Zelensky’s rambling rhetoric obvious through the English interpreter struggling to make sense of Zelensky’s attempt to sound elequent — even while constantly looking down at his written notes:

The English online publication of the Russian news outlet Pravda included a short commentary of Zelensky’s attempt at prophesying Putin’s death.

The outlet called Zelensky a “latecomer” in the process, and harkened back to an interview he gave a month ago during which he made a similar statement, according to Pravda:

The latecomer made this “prediction” in an interview with Eurovision News against the backdrop of the Eiffel Tower, painted in the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

The former comedian also noted that he is younger than the Russian president, so you need to “bet on him. ”

Zelensky has made similar statements before. A month ago, in an interview with The Economist, he claimed that Putin “has no time”, unlike him, who “still wants to live, travel and enjoy freedom”.

There are also increased rumors that Zelensky may have made the statements in line with some secret plan to assassinate Putin.

While that speculation could always hold merit in a world where the CIA, the French Intelligence Directorate, and the Mossad are operating… it does seem a little far-fetched to think that a legitimate attempt to kill Putin is in the works by Western powers while President Trump is fully engaged in stopping the war by other means.

After all, it is very unlikely that Zelensky would know of a serious attempt on Putin’s life without President Trump knowing.

Nevertheless, those rumors have shown up on social media today as well, as a result of Zelensky’s comments on French television:

Zelensky’s revived claims that Putin will ‘die soon’ could also be related to rumors last week — also mentioned by Zelensky — that Putin suffered some type of health event.

There were even more rumors of a ‘mini stroke’, though those claims are not new.

But apparently, Putin was seen shaking during a news conference last week, and was covered by at least some news media including the Mirror in the UK:

Volodymyr Zelensky has declared Vladimir Putin “will die soon” – amid intensifying blitzes on Ukraine.

The defiant Ukrainian leader, 47, made the blunt statement as chatter about Mr Putin’s health continues to circulate. It was reported last week Mr Putin had experienced “a mini stroke” after he was seen shaking uncontrollably during a conference.

Mr Zelensky met Emmanuel Macron, President of France, today to talk peace, following a shaky Black Sea ceasefire brokered by the US on Tuesday. They pleaded for the US to “stay strong” in the face of Russian skulduggery – but Mr Zelensky remained determined. He said: “He [Putin] will die soon, and that’s a fact, and it will come to an end.”

Mr Zelensky added he feels Mr Putin is trying to “hit the European Union from within” – citing Hungary, which sides with Russia. However, the Ukrainian leader gave no further details about Mr Putin’s ill-health.

While those rumors could also prove true — Putin is 72 years old, after all — there have been no other confirmations that I could find reporting that information with any verification.

It would also not be the first time health rumors have circled about Putin’s alleged imminent death.

Check out this video from 2 years ago published on YouTube by an Australian news outlet purportedly showing Putin gripping the table and struggling with his posture and jerky foot movements:

One popular self-described Zelensky opposition figure shared Zelensky’s comments today via his X account, along with a much more simple take on Zelensky’s statement.

Denys Yelisevych shares the common view that Zelensky is simply reading the tea leaves, recognizes that Ukraine is losing militarily and also losing its former ability to leverage the West.

Therefore, Yelisevych points out, Zelensky is very transparently attempting to sabotage the peace process:

Here is the full text of Yelisevych’s very rational take on the situation:

Zelensky is obviously mentally unwell.

Putin is a bad guy… but what Zelensky is doing and saying at such a critical moment of peace negotiations looks like he’s just sabotaging them. He did the same thing on Lex Fridman’s podcast.

The fact is, Ukraine is losing, and Putin is in a much stronger position on the battlefield, not to mention that Putin’s personal relationship with Trump is far more solid than Zelensky’s.

As I’ve said many times before, in the end, President Trump will have no choice but to force elections in Ukraine. Or remove Zelensky from power by force.

Conservative pundit Ian Miles Cheong also took to his X account in an attempt to explain Zelensky’s comments on French television.

In my opinion, Cheong gives Zelensky too much credit in that he assumes the Ukrainian leader just doesn’t understand that Putin — in terms of the alternative Russian leadership — is actually a MODERATE.

While I’ll agree that Putin is in fact a MODERATE compared to some of his own generals and advisors, I don’t think Zelensky is unaware of that fact.

I think he knows, and just doesn’t care.

He’s far more interested in spending Western dollars and the lives of his own countrymen — even the lives of other Western nations if necessary — to fulfill his personal ambition of defeating Putin.

And although Putin has indeed appeared with a puffy face and strange symptoms from time to time, the reports of his health issues are nothing new — as The Daily Mail reports:

Zelensky’s damning assessment of Putin’s health came during a sit-down interview with journalists in Paris following a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron yesterday.

He said: ‘He (Putin) will die soon, and that’s a fact, and it will come to an end.’

Despite his attempts to project an image of hypermasculinity, Putin has long faced rumours that he suffers from health issues.

In recent years the 72-year-old has appeared to have a puffy face, a twitching leg and blood-shot eyes only fuelling the speculation further.

One particular famous incident in 2022 saw the president slouching in his chair while gripping a table and slurring his words during a meeting with then-Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu.

There have also been reports of him coughing incessantly, and his hands and feet making seemingly involuntary jerky movements.

On several occasions, he appeared to walk with a limp.

There have also been claims that he might have cancer and Parkinson’s Disease.

During last night’s interview Zelensky also claimed that Putin is trying ‘hit the European Union from within’ in reference to more Russian friendly members of the bloc such as Hungary.

At the moment, there doesn’t seem to be anything to substantiate Zelensky’s certainty that Putin is ready to kick the bucket.

And there seems to be even less certainty that if he does… hostilities will suddenly cease, wildflowers will spring up across Ukrainian battlefields over night, and the threat of Russian aggression — MADE FAR MORE REAL BY PEOPLE LIKE ZELENSKY — will suddenly evaporate.

There are serious players in Russia only a few heartbeats away from the Presidency who actually would drop nukes on Ukraine, given the chance.

And some who would, by many accounts, drop them on other Western nations as well.

So whether Zelensky is simply trying to stir up problems for President Trump at an inopportune time, or even if he does have some inside scoop on Putin’s soon demise — the likelihood that anything but war happens in Ukraine still seems to hinge on one thing.

And that is President Trump’s ability to leverage superpower-sized pressure, along with expert deal-making, in order to achieve a cessation of hostilities.

Can President Trump pull off an end of hostilities?  Probably.

But as long as instigators like Zelensky and the other Western leaders who brought things to this point to begin with are still around to make trouble… it remains to be seen how long any cessation of fighting will actually last.
