If you follow soccer at all, then you know Lionel Messi is one of the greatest soccer players to ever lace up their cleats.

President Trump on Thursday invited Messi and his Inter Miami teammates to the White House to celebrate their MLS championship win.

During his speech, President Trump congratulated the team and noted that this was Messi’s first visit to the White House.

He also shared that his son Barron, who is a big fan of the soccer star, got to meet him, too.

In true Trump fashion, you know he had to crack a joke:

WFAA reported more on the visit:

President Donald Trump welcomed 2025 MLS Cup champions Inter Miami – including Argentina soccer star Lionel Messi – to the White House on Thursday.

“Today, we’re thrilled to host the 2025 MLS Cup Champions, Inter Miami … and it’s my distinct privilege to say what no American president has ever had the chance to say before: welcome to the White House, Lionel Messi,” Trump said at the event.

Messi was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by former President Biden, but missed the ceremony due to a scheduling conflict.

During the visit, Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas and Lionel Messi presented Trump with gifts, including a 47 jersey, a watch, and a custom bedazzled soccer ball.

Trump was awarded the newly created peace prize by FIFA back in December 2025 during the World Cup group draw ceremony.

There was also another major sports star in the White House.

Former New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez was in the house.
