Former NFL punter Chris Kluwe was arrested Tuesday at a city council meeting in Huntington Beach, California for protesting a plaque on display at the local public library through which he referred to as “peaceful civil disobedience.”

Kluwe, 43, and other residents of the right-leaning town showed up to the meeting in order to protest a plaque at the library that they viewed as a “propaganda statement” due to references to the Make American Great Again movement. During the meeting, the former Minnesota Vikings player unleashed into an anti-Trump tirade before the Republican-led council.

“Unfortunately, it’s clear that this council does not listen, so instead I’m going to take my time to say what MAGA has stood for these past three weeks. MAGA stands for trying to erase trans people from existence. MAGA stands for resegregation and racism. MAGA stands for censorship and book bans. MAGA stands for firing air traffic controllers while planes are crashing. MAGA stands for firing the people overseeing our nuclear arsenal,” Kluwe ranted.

“MAGA stands for firing military veterans and those serving them at the VA, including canceling research on veteran suicide. MAGA stands for Cutting Funds to Education, including for disabled children. MAGA is profoundly corrupt, unmistakably anti-democracy,” he continued before claiming that “MAGA is explicitly a Nazi movement.”

“You may have replaced a swastika with a red hat, but that is what it is,” Kluwe said before walking towards council members in what he called “the time-honored American tradition of peaceful civil disobedience.”

The former NFL punter was then arrested and escorted out of the meeting by police officers. Kluwe, who played for the Minnesota Vikings from 2005 through 2012, was cited and ultimately released after spending about four hours in custody.

The plaque being protested by Kluwe and others contains the words “Magical,” “Alluring,” “Galvanizing,” and “Adventurous” placed next to each other in order to spell out “MAGA” followed by what appears to be a direct reference to the president’s movement. “Through hope and change our nation has built back better to the golden era of Making America Great Again!” the plaque reads, according to a report from the Orange County Register.

Kluwe has long been outspoken about his support for the LGBT movement and left-wing political causes. His political activities is believed to have led to a rift between Kluwe and the Vikings coaching staff, the outlet reported.

He told the Orange County Register that his statement was not directed towards the city council, but more towards the president’s supporters. “This was done not with the intention of changing the council’s mind, because I don’t think those minds can be changed,” Kluwe said. “It was done so that people who are watching and people who will watch understand that this is important enough to get arrested for. That it’s important to stand up and speak truth to power and to do so in a way that other people can emulate.”
