President Donald Trump warned on Thursday that he would use the Insurrection Act to stop the “professional agitators and insurrectionists” attacking and disrupting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials in Minnesota if state and local lawmakers do not put an end to the violent riots and attacks against federal law enforcement officials.

In a Thursday statement on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “If the corrupt politicians of Minnesota don’t obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the Patriots of I.C.E., who are only trying to do their job, I will institute the INSURRECTION ACT, which many Presidents have done before me, and quickly put an end to the travesty that is taking place in that once great State.”

Trump’s warning regarding the potential use of the Insurrection Act comes after two ICE shootings have occurred in Minneapolis amid the administration’s surge of ICE operations throughout Minnesota. Last week, Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, was fatally shot by an ICE agent after weaponizing her vehicle and attempting to run federal agents over.

Fox News reported that a second ICE incident took place on Wednesday involving an ICE agent shooting an alleged illegal immigrant in the leg. According to the outlet, the Department of Homeland Security explained that the ICE agent shot the alleged illegal immigrant because he was “fearing for his life and safety” after the suspect resisted arrest and “violently assaulted the officer.” Fox News noted that the ICE agent was hospitalized and the suspect was reported in stable condition and was taken into custody.

According to Fox News, the anti-ICE protests in Minnesota continued on Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, with protesters using whistles and horns and displaying signs with messages such as “f-ck ICE,” while law enforcement officials used pepper balls and tear gas to disperse the protesters. The outlet cited Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, who claimed protesters committed “unlawful acts,” such as throwing fireworks at law enforcement officials.

Fox News reported that the Insurrection Act, which was passed in 1807, would allow Trump to deploy the military to enforce federal laws and restore order in Minnesota. The last time the Insurrection Act was used was in 1992 during the Los Angeles riots, according to Fox News.

Following Trump’s warning on Thursday, Gov. Tim Walz (D-Minn.) released a statement, saying, “I am making a direct appeal to the President: let’s turn the temperature down. Stop this campaign of retribution. This is not who we are.”

In a statement obtained by Fox News, Abigail Jackson, a White House spokeswoman, addressed Walz’s comments, saying, “Tim Walz, Jacob Frey, and Democrat leaders in Minnesota have done nothing but turn up the temperature, smear heroic ICE officers, and incite violence against them – all in defense of criminal illegal aliens.”
