President Donald Trump on Thursday night endorsed a temporary spending bill to fund the government until September, emphasizing the urgency of passing a budget to avoid a shutdown. His statement came as Congress faces a March 14 deadline to finalize a budget resolution.

Trump took to TRUTH Social to express his frustration with the current state of the federal budget, attributing the delay to his predecessor, Joe Biden. “As usual, Sleepy Joe Biden left us a total MESS. The Budget from last YEAR is still not done. We are working very hard with the House and Senate to pass a clean, temporary government funding Bill (“CR”) to the end of September. Let’s get it done!” Trump wrote.

His comments reflect a broader Republican critique of the previous administration’s fiscal policies. Trump asserted that Biden left office without signing a federal budget, leading to the current legislative scramble to fund the government.

Congress has been actively working on passing a budget bill before the looming deadline. The House successfully passed a budget resolution on Tuesday, but not without some initial obstacles. Republican leadership initially pulled the budget resolution from the night’s agenda after struggling to gain the necessary votes. However, they later rescheduled the vote, leading to its eventual passage. Key Republican holdouts included Reps. Tim Burchett of Tennessee, Warren Davidson of Ohio, Thomas Massie of Kentucky, and Victoria Spartz of Indiana. While Burchett, Davidson, and Spartz ultimately supported the bill, Massie maintained his opposition, as reported by The Hill.

Just the News reports the senate had already passed its version of the budget earlier in the month. With both chambers now having their respective versions, negotiators from the House and Senate must collaborate to finalize a compromise bill. The House budget blueprint includes $5 trillion in new spending, allocating funds for border security initiatives championed by Trump and extending the tax cuts from his 2017 legislation.
