Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has just decided to escalate the trade war.
As President Trump’s 25% tariffs on Canadian exports and 10% tariffs on energy are set to go into effect on midnight Tuesday, Trudeau just announced that Canada will be imposing their own retaliatory tariffs on the U.S.
Trudeau claims that President Trump’s tariffs on Canada are “unjustified” and that Canada will be imposing a 25% tariffs against $155 billion of American goods in response.

That is virtually meaningless to Americans

Axios reported:
If President Trump’s tariffs against Canada take effect, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the U.S. would immediately face a raft of countermeasures on Tuesday.
Why it matters: Trump’s comments Monday that he would impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico sent markets sliding amid fears it could start a trade war, see inflation soar and hugely impact all three nations’ economies — and Trudeau in a statement noted the measures would hurt the U.S.
- “Because of the tariffs imposed by the U.S., Americans will pay more for groceries, gas, and cars, and potentially lose thousands of jobs. Tariffs will disrupt an incredibly successful trading relationship,” Trudeau said.
What to expect: Trudeau said Canadian officials would move to impose 25% tariffs against “$155 billion of American goods” at 12:01am Tuesday, when he noted Trump’s “unjustified” tariffs are due to take effect on exports from Canada and Mexico.
- Canada would start with tariffs on “$30 billion worth of goods immediately, and tariffs on the remaining $125 billion on American products in 21 days’ time,” Trudeau said.
The New York Post has more details:
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday he’s ready to escalate the trade war with President Trump if the US leader moves forward with 25% tariffs on products from the northern nation at midnight.
Trudeau called America’s impending action against Canada “unjustified” and vowed to not let it go “unanswered.”
He said if American tariffs begin, Canada will retaliate with 25% tariffs against $155 billion in American goods also at midnight – starting with $30 billion worth of products right away and tariffs on the remaining $125 billion over a 21-day span.
“Our tariffs will remain in place until the U.S. trade action is withdrawn, and should U.S. tariffs not cease, we are in active and ongoing discussions with provinces and territories to pursue several non-tariff measures,” Trudeau said in a statement.
Trump told reporters at the White House earlier Monday that 25% tariffs would be slapped on products from Canada and Mexico at midnight following a 30-day pause on the action.
Not a smart move, Gov. Trudeau…
I think it’s cute Trudeau thinks he can win this tariff war when in fact he’s systematically destroying his own country. Canadians forget who’s the real enemy. pic.twitter.com/vZt9dDZJLm
