(The Hill) — Two hosts of “TMZ Live” apologized after laughter was heard on a live stream during the outlet’s coverage of Charlie Kirk’s assassination on Wednesday.
As President Donald Trump announced Kirk had died after being shot at Utah Valley University, TMZ’s livestream showed staff at the tabloid rushing to update their coverage.
Laughter and cheers were heard in the background, but hosts Harvey Levin and Charles Latibeaudiere said the outburst had nothing to do with Kirk’s death.
“We were livestreaming all day during this tragedy when something happened in our office,” Levin said as part of an apology posted online. “As we were reporting the assassination of Charlie Kirk, there were some people in the back room away from our news desk here who were watching a car chase and they were laughing, they were clapping, and you could hear it out here, and we want to make a couple of things clear.”
Levin said, “I know these people, and they were not laughing, they were not reacting that way about Charlie Kirk’s assassination.”
“They were not,” he insisted. “They would not work here if they did.”
Kirk’s assassination sent a shockwave across the political and media worlds on Wednesday, with Trump and other leading Republicans expressing sadness and outrage at the young activist’s killing.
The FBI during a press conference on Thursday said Kirk’s assassin remains at large, but said authorities had recovered the rifle used in the shooting and obtained videos of the suspect.
