On Good Friday, thousands of pro-life Christians across the U.S. marked the Passion of Christ by praying the Way of the Cross outside abortion facilities.

According to a press release from the Pro-Life Action League, which organized the events, nearly 80 prayer vigils took place across 28 states April 18.

In Denver, a small group stood in the snow across the street from Planned Parenthood of the Rockies to participate in the solemn prayers. Local organizer Thomas Uebbing reported that 15 people were gathered, guided by Deacon Greg Frank of St. Mary’s Parish in Littleton.

“We prayed on Good Friday remembering Our Lord’s suffering and the victims of abortion,” Uebbing said in the release. “[We] also remember the millions of women who have been sold a lie at the cost of their children’s lives — and their own happiness.”

The group reflected on Christ’s Passion while they prayed before a series of images depicting the Stations of the Cross that was fastened to a barbed-wire fence along the edge of a parking lot across from the abortion facility. The final station was followed by a Divine Mercy image.

“The prayers focused on the sufferings of Jesus Christ and featured excerpts from Scripture and a short reference to the tragedy of abortion noting the gravity of the sin but offering the mercy of the Crucified One,” Uebbing told CatholicVote. “Each station concluded with a verse sung to the tune of ‘Stabat Mater.’”

The Pro-Life Action League described the nationwide effort as a way to mourn the victims of abortion while also confronting the emotional toll that abortion takes on women.

“The abortion industry pushes the lie that abortion solves a pregnant woman’s problems and provides relief,” Uebbing said, “but that’s simply not the case.”

Citing new peer-reviewed studies, Uebbing pointed to research showing that grief — not relief — is more commonly reported among women who undergo abortions, particularly in cases involving pressure or personal moral conflict.

“We have to put an end to the myth that abortion is a cure-all for [pregnant women],” he said, “when the research shows it’s a doorway to a lifetime of grief.”
