The Texas General Land Office (GLO) has proposed leasing land for a detention facility to the incoming administration of President-elect Donald J. Trump. Commissioner Dawn Buckingham is offering a 1,400-acre tract in Starr County, Texas, intended for the processing and detention of violent criminal migrants.
Buckingham, who says she is in communication with Trump and his presidential transition team, indicated readiness to collaborate with federal agencies like the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to facilitate what she described as a significant deportation initiative. The land in question was acquired by the Texas GLO in October and is situated near the state’s border with Mexico.
In the past, land ownership issues have hampered federal law enforcement activities at the border and, in some instances, allowed illicit activities to continue unabated. The acquisition is part of a broader strategy to bolster security, which includes constructing a 1.5-mile border wall segment along the property’s Rio Grande frontage. This development follows recent GLO initiatives, such as designating a strategically important island along the Rio Grande as state property to disrupt smuggling routes utilized by cartels.
President-elect Trump has hinted at the potential use of military forces to support his border control measures, especially regarding the arrest and separation of members of violent criminal gangs.
Previously, Buckingham’s efforts have included collaborations with Texas law enforcement agencies to curb illegal activities on state lands. Her ongoing initiatives demonstrate the GLO’s active participation in supporting Texas’s role in federal immigration policies. The ranch identified for the facility is approximately 20 miles east of a site previously targeted for cartel disruption operations.
