After a contentious debate HB0533 passed in the House. This bill will codify an unlimited right to in-vitro fertilization, without restriction, in Tennessee law. It is suspicious why the bill was brought since there is nothing in Tennessee law that prohibits IVF. The sponsor was asked several times why she was bringing the bill since it was unnecessary. She never answered adequately.
This bill would allow, as a right under the law, the destruction of “unwanted” human embryos as well as screening/testing that would identify certain traits and characteristics that could target these tiny humans for destruction. Without regulations around this industry, creating an unlimited right to IVF is dangerous and reckless. (read more here)
CatholicVote’s recent alert on HB0533 pointed out that “IVF may seem pro-life on the surface, but the reality is grim: For every human embryo born through IVF, multiple of his or her siblings were destroyed. There are currently no restrictions on how many embryos can be created through IVF. The number of embryos killed every year via IVF is actually higher than the annual number of abortions.”
Several Republican legislators joined Representative Chris Todd (R-Madison County) in asking Governor Lee to veto the bill, citing that “24 House Democrats should give you pause to consider whether it, well-intended or not, is a Trojan horse that could potentially undermine Tennessee’s strong and righteous stance on the protection of innocent human life.” (read full letter here)
This cross over by pro-abortion groups was also pointed out by Representative Timothy Hill (R-Blountville) in the discussion on the House floor when he brought up that the ACLU supports this legislation, stating, “The bottom line is that today you cast your vote not with a friend, not with a colleague, but with an organization that stands against life, an organization that stands against our very principles of who we are as a state and who we have demonstrated as who we are in this body.” Planned Parenthood has also endorsed this legislation on their website.
HB0533 has just been sent to the Governor’s desk for his signature. We are asking him to veto this bill. His veto will NOT prohibit IVF or contraception – it will simply let Tennessee law stand as it is.
Please call Governor Lee’s office at your earliest convenience. We suggest the following polite and clear message: Please veto HB0533. It is a bad bill for Tennessee. As the most pro-life state in the nation, we can do better. Governor Bill Lee (615) 741-2001
