Priests for Life this week asked our supporters to consider visiting their U.S. senators and members of the U.S. House of Representatives in their home district offices to urge them to defund abortion in the federal budget.
Specifically, what we are asking for is that Medicaid funding be withheld from any organization, business or medical practice that kills children in abortions. Because pro-life Republicans dominate the House and Senate, we have an opportunity to use what’s known as a reconciliation bill to accomplish this never-before-realized goal.
Today I took to the road in the early morning to drive 90 minutes to Columbus to visit the offices of Ohio Sen. Bernie Moreno and Rep. Mike Carey.
As a result of redistricting in Ohio, I am now in Carey’s district. First elected to Congress in 2020, during his first term he voted consistently to defend the lives of the unborn. He voted in favor of the Born-Alive Abortion Survivor’s Protection Act, the Supporting Pregnant Women and Families Act and several other pro-life bills and resolutions.

I was hoping to meet him but he was not in the office when I arrived. That’s OK because the staff was more than happy to hear my message, especially when they heard I work for Priests for Life.
My second stop was the office of first-term senator Moreno, a Republican who defeated pro-abortion incumbent Sherrod Brown last November. Moreno ran with the endorsement of pro-life groups like Susan B. Anthony and Ohio Right to Life.
National Director Frank Pavone and Executive Director Janet Morana are planning visits with Florida lawmakers next week and the message they will convey, and have asked supporters to share while visiting their own senators and representatives, is that this moment is too good to waste.
We have an opportunity to defund abortion, including Planned Parenthood. Those we elect to speak for us in the nation’s capital need to hear from us, their constituents, how vitally important this is to us. It’s not one issue among many.
