The suspect in the molotov cocktail attack on a group of pro-Israel demonstrators has been identified as Mohamad Soliman, according to reports from independent reporter Sarah Fields and the New York Post that were later confirmed by the FBI.
Soliman was arrested after tossing molotov cocktails at a group of demonstrators walking with “Run for Their Lives,” a grassroots organization that organizes global walking and running events to call for the release of Israeli hostages being held by Hamas.
The attack occurred near the Pearl Street Mall shortly after 1:30 p.m. local time.
Footage from the scene shows a shirtless Soliman yelling “Free Palestine” and “end Zionists” while holding two bottles filled with a clear liquid. Flames from the previous explosions were still burning, while at least one woman appeared to be critically injured.
Onlookers could be seen using water from a nearby fountain to treat the seriously injured victim until EMS personnel arrived. Miri Kornfeld, the event organizer, told CBS News that at least one woman was completely engulfed in flames and had to roll on the ground in order to extinguish them.
The suspect, who sustained minor injuries as a result of his own attack, was arrested without incident after police responded to the scene.
“The initial callers indicated that there was a man with a weapon and that people were being set on fire,” Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn said at a press conference. “We were on scene very quickly. When we arrived, we encountered multiple victims that were injured with injuries consistent with burns and other injuries.”
Independent reporter Sarah Fields first identified the suspect as Mohamad Soliman about an hour after the attack. According to eyewitnesses, the attacker used a “makeshift flamethrower” and tossed incendiary devices at the group, which included children.
FBI Special Agent McCullough confirmed that the agency had determined based on preliminary facts that Soliman carried out a “targeted attack” and that the agency would investigate the attack as an act of terrorism, Newsweek reported.
At this time, the FBI does not believe that Soliman, 45, has ties to any wider terrorist network, though the agency noted that a thorough investigation is underway. He did not reveal which charges Soliman will be facing during the brief press conference.
At least six victims between theses of 67 and 88 were transported to local hospitals with injuries of varying degrees of severity. Four of the victims of the attack were taken to Boulder Community Hospital, and two others were airlifted to the Aurora Hospital Burn Unit.
Independent journalist Laura Loomer reported that Soliman appears to be an immigrant from Kuwait who entered the country two years ago. A work profile lists him as a Certified Finance Manager with the Global Association for Quality Management. It further notes that he is fluent in both Arabic and English.
