Donald Trump has slammed Pretty Woman star Julia Roberts for a ‘cringe’ advert in which she tells women they can vote ‘in secret’ for his rival Kamala Harris.

The Oscar-winning actress narrated a 30-second commercial – likely to be seen by millions before Tuesday’s presidential election – which shows two women entering a polling booth, glancing at each other, then secretly casting their vote for Ms Harris.

Ms Roberts says: ‘In the one place in America where women still have a right to choose, you can vote any way you want and no one will ever know. Remember, what happens in the booth stays in the booth.’

As they leave the polling centre, one woman’s husband asks: ‘Did you make the right choice?’ to which she responds: ‘Sure did, honey.’

Last night Mr Trump told Fox News: ‘I’m so disappointed at Julia Roberts. She’s going to look back at that and cringe.

‘I happen to be married to a rather strong woman. I’ve surrounded myself with strong women. Can you imagine a wife not telling a husband who she’s voting for? Did you ever hear anything like that?

‘Even if you have a bad relationship, you’re going to tell your husband. That’s a ridiculous ad.’

The advert, for liberal group Vote Common Good, provoked an immediate backlash. Toni Holt Kramer, founder of the Trumpettes, one of the most influential Republican women’s groups in the US, said: ‘Julia Roberts should stick to acting. What makes her think she can talk to anyone about politics?

‘How patronising is it, in this day and age, to suggest women need permission to vote differently to their husbands?

‘Women aren’t stupid. Ms Roberts is absurdly condescending.’

The attempt to persuade Republican women to switch their vote to Ms Harris has become a cornerstone of the election.

Ms Harris has campaigned heavily on restoring abortion rights in Republican states after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, the case which made abortion legal throughout the US.

Meanwhile, Indiana Jones star Harrison Ford has joined the chorus of stars voting for Ms Harris.

In a video released last night, Ford, 82, said: ‘Kamala Harris will protect your right to disagree with her about her policies or her ideas.’

Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Leonardo DiCaprio have all publicly endorsed Ms Harris.
