Although he was widely expected to be a first-round NFL draft pick, Shedeur Sanders was passed up by team after team last month.

Many fans of the standout college player, whose father is football legend Deion Sanders, shared their thoughts after he slid out of the first round.

President Donald Trump was among those who expressed frustration on behalf of the player. In a recent interview, Sanders offered his thoughts about the presidential post.

According to the New York Post:

“I was truly thankful for it,” he said. “Including him, there were a lot of fans, a lot of people in barbershops, a lot of hairstylists. A lot of fans of me, my craft and my family that were there in support. I was thankful that I have that foundation.”

Sanders’ slide was one of the biggest stories of this year’s draft.

Projected as a potential top-three pick, Sanders wasn’t taken until the fifth round of the draft after Cleveland traded up to take him 144th overall.

Sanders’ reaction to the surprising draft development has sparked significant social media discussion in recent days:

For his part, the incoming NFL rookie thinks he’s in pretty good company, per Bleacher Report:

Shedeur Sanders believes his story will write itself much like that of seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, fueled by words of encouragement from the legend himself.

“My story is going to be similar, you know, I was a late-round draft pick,” Sanders told reporters. “But we’re here now so none of that stuff matters, it just mattered on the day. I’m just excited to be here and ready to work.”

After Sanders slid to the fifth round of the 2025 draft, selected 144th overall on Day 3 by the Cleveland Browns, it’s hard not to compare his fall to the slide of five-time MVP Tom Brady, who was drafted in the sixth round at 199th overall.

Even Brady himself advised to forget the draft, emphasizing that Day 2 is what truly matters.

“I actually texted Shedeur because I know him very well, and I said, ‘Dude, like, whatever happens, wherever you go, like, that’s your first day. Day 2 matters more than the draft” Brady said on the Impaulsive podcast. “I was [pick] 199. So, who could speak on it better than me, like, what that really means? Use it as motivation. You’re gonna get your chances. Go take advantage of it.’”
