House Speaker Mike Johnson says that he’s ‘hoping and praying’ that there are enough Democrats in the Senate willing to break ranks and ‘do the right thing’.

But apparently there’s an actual plan in place, and it’s gaining steam.

Reports are now indicating that a group of rogue Democrats are willing to work behind Chuck Schumer’s back to help Republicans end the government shutdown.

According to Johnson, neither Hakeem Jeffries in the House, nor Schumer in the Senate have the guts to risk blowback from the most radical elements in their own party.

And so the only hope of gaining enough Democrat “Yes” votes for the Republican bill to reopen the government… relies on completely circumventing Chuck Schumer.

To which Speaker Johnson replied: GAME ON.

Here’s a clip of Speaker Johnson confirming that change of approach:

Speaker Johnson was apparently referring to a very specific group of Democrats in the US Senate.

And word is that those talks are ongoing and serious — all without the blessing of dear old Chuck.

It’s a numbers game, and depending on how you do the math, and which way a few specific Republicans vote…

Republicans need a handful of Democrats (maybe slightly more than a handful…) to break ranks and sign on with the Republican plan.

Even with that news, the same Democrats signaling that they are willing to make a deal are saying they’re getting pushback, according to this from The Hill:

A group of centrist Senate Democrats are sounding out Democratic colleagues on a potential deal to reopen the federal government this week or next week, but they’re getting strong pushback that could scuttle a potential agreement, according to people familiar with the discussions.

A senator familiar with the behind-the-scenes negotiations said centrist Democrats, including retiring Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and Gary Peters (D-Mich.), have the contours of a deal and are “whipping” more of their colleagues to sign on — but it’s not yet clear whether they’ll get enough additional votes to end the 36-day shutdown.

Senate sources say Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) has also signaled she would likely support a deal to reopen the government.

Such a deal would include a plan to pass regular appropriations bills and a promised vote on extending expiring health insurance subsidies.

The final details, however, are yet to be finalized.

“There’s a plan, we’ve all kind of semi agreed to it and we’re now seeing not whether [Senate Democratic Leader Chuck] Schumer will support it but whether he will not blow it up,” said a senator who requested anonymity to discuss the negotiations.

One person familiar with Tuesday’s heated discussion within the caucus says there appears to be at least eight Democratic votes to reopen the government — even though progressive Democratic senators vented their frustration with the potential deal.

If Shaheen, Peters and Hassan vote for a short-term spending deal, Republican leaders would need only two more votes to reopen the government.

Because Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) has repeatedly voted against a House-passed continuing resolution to fund the government through Nov. 21, GOP leaders need eight Democrats to cross the aisle. (Emphasis added.)

If you noticed the part in that article I highlighted in bold, you know the ‘math’ I was alluding to.

If Rand Paul votes with Republicans, then there’s an argument to be made that only ONE MORE DEMOCRAT would need to sign on with those already ready to make a deal.

Not to make this all about Rand Paul — after all, he didn’t cause the shut down.

Democrats did, as Speaker Johnson clearly reiterated again in this clip he shared via X.com:

Here’s the full text of his post:

REMEMBER: It takes 60 votes in the Senate to reopen the government. Republicans have just 53 seats — which means we need at least 7 Democrats to vote to reopen the government.

The House ALREADY passed the clean CR funding bill back on September 19, and Senate Republicans have done EVERYTHING possible to end the Democrat Shutdown.

Since picking pointless political fights plays better with Chuck Schumer’s radical Marxist base, he’s refusing to let his members vote to open the government.

As he said, they have now admitted openly that this was about appeasing their own radical left.

They shut the US federal government down because if they didn’t, they wouldn’t have had enough TURNOUT for those radicals to win like they did in Tuesday’s election.

If you want to take a little deeper dive in that end of the pool, here’s my story from yesterday calling Chuck Schumer out in particular on that point:

Why So MYSTERIOUS, Chuck? Schumer Asked Point Blank if He Voted for Zohran Mamdani

Speaker Johnson brought that same point home during an appearance on Fox News prior to Tuesday’s elections.

And he detailed EXACTLY what I pointed out in that story.

Jeffries and Chuck Schumer are terrified of the radicals in their own party, and they’re willing to SHUT DOWN THE GOVERNMENT because they literally don’t know what else to do.

They’ve allowed a monster — a radical pro-terror faction — to dominate their party.

And now… they no longer have control of the monster they THOUGHT to unleash upon the Republicans, for their own political gain.

Remember years ago when those radical college Professors were being CANCELLED by the same radicals they created?

It’s that — all over again.

Here’s that clip of Johnson on Fox News making that case on Monday:

I’m going heavy on the videos of Mike Johnson in this story.

But it’s because he’s putting on a master class in explaining the terrible decisions of Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer that caused this shutdown.

Check out this clip shared by Fox News of the Speaker contrasting the FEAR-BASED decisions that Jeffries and Schumer have fallen into:

And that means Chuck Schumer, and Jeffries as well, are essentially NON-ISSUES from this point on.

They are completely irrelevant, except as a gnat that buzzes in your ear and drives you nuts.

And that’s the truth that Speaker Johnson has made clear he’s now operating under when it comes to appealing to a small group of Democrats in the Senate willing to break ranks with the Democrat leadership.

Those talks “have increased”, according to Democratic Sen. Gary Peters, as quoted in this story by the New York Post:

The government shutdown has entered its 36th day, breaking the record as the longest ever and disrupting the lives of millions of Americans with federal program cuts, flight delays, and federal workers nationwide left without paychecks.

Central to any endgame will be a series of agreements that would need to be upheld not only by the Senate, but also the House, and the White House, which is not at all certain in Washington.

First of all, senators from both parties, particularly the powerful members of the Appropriations Committee, are pushing to ensure the normal government funding process in Congress can be put back on track.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, the chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., along with several Democrats, including Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire and Chris Coons of Delaware, are among those working behind the scenes.

“The pace of talks have increased,” said Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich., who has been involved in conversations.

The White House says its position remains unchanged and that Democrats must vote to fund the government before talks over health care can begin. White House officials are in close contact with GOP senators who have been quietly speaking with key Senate Democrats, according to a senior White House official. The official was granted anonymity to discuss administration strategy.

There’s always the chance the Democrats under Schumer and Jeffries are successfully prevented from making a deal with Republicans.

After all, they have argued that the more this goes on… the BETTER they look to the American people.

That’s a tone deaf statement that is completely failing to read the room.

But if Schumer and Jeffries believe their own hype, that’s exactly the sort of misconception that could cause them to WANT the government to stay shut down.

I know, I know — a lot of the government could stay shut down INDEFINITELY!

But there are key components that leave us vulnerable.  Or, I could say…

There are key aspects to the shut down that push us closer to a ‘crisis’; or at the very least can be successfully painted as a crisis by the media.

Who was it that said to never let a crisis go to waste?

It was the very radicals that now have Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer by the throat, wearing them like an ‘Edgar-suit’ from the original Men in Black movie.

I halfway expected the government shutdown to end OVER NIGHT after the election, once it’s usefulness in that regard was fulfilled.

But now I wonder.

Has that far-left radical left realized they can squeeze more ‘crisis’ out of this shutdown… if they can keep their party from breaking ranks?

That’s the story going forward.  And that’s what I’ll be watching.
