Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been an extraordinary workhorse and advocate for President Trump’s policies of reversing the hollowing out of the American university system. The latest is Rubio’s announcement on students from Communist China.
The U.S. will begin revoking visas of Chinese students, including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields.

Rubio’s announcement did not specify how many students would lose their ability to study in the U.S., but suggested the effort would focus on people with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or those studying sensitive subjects.
“Under President Trump’s leadership, the U.S. State Department will work with the Department of Homeland Security to aggressively revoke visas for Chinese students, including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields,” he said in a statement. “We will also revise visa criteria to enhance scrutiny of all future visa applications from the People’s Republic of China and Hong Kong.”
In the last school year, approximately 277,000 students from Communist China came to the US to study in our universities. That is almost one-quarter of all foreign students in the US.
And the practice of allowing students from a hostile county into our university system has not been without issues.
Five former University of Michigan students have been charged after they were caught allegedly covering up spying on a National Guard training center in Michigan for the People’s Republic of China (PRC) while a training operation with the Taiwanese military was taking place.
The former students, all Chinese nationals, were confronted by a sergeant major of the Utah National Guard in August 2023 after midnight near a lake at Camp Grayling, according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court Oct. 1.
And …
A former graduate student in Chicago was sentenced to eight years in prison Wednesday for spying for the Chinese government by gathering information on engineers and scientists in the United States. (snip)
According to the Justice Department, Ji was tasked with providing an intelligence officer with biographical information on individuals for potential recruitment as Chinese spies. The individuals included Chinese nationals who were working as engineers and scientists in the US, some of whom worked for American defense contractors.
Ji’s spying was part of an effort by Chinese intelligence to obtain access to advanced aerospace and satellite technologies being developed by US companies, the Justice Department said in a statement.
Chinese predation on America intellectual property has a long, sordid, and well known history. Not to mention their relentless attempts at burying surveillance technology in all manner of imported products, including stuff like solar gear.
President Trump has expanded the scrutiny of student visas from Harvard to the system in general. It seems excessive (and counter-productive) to fill upwards of 30% of university slots with foreign students and leave American parents to pay taxes that fund a higher education system that shuts out their children. Insult to injury is when such students are here with nefarious motives, either as spies or as anti-Semitic agitators and rioters. Marco Rubio has been quite clear over the past couple of months that no one is entitled to a student visa
if you come to this country as a student, we expect you to go to class and study and get a degree. If you come here to, like, vandalize a library, take over a campus, and do all kinds of crazy things, you know, we’re going to get rid of these people. And we’re going to continue to do it. So when we identify lunatics like these, we take away their student visa.
No one’s entitled to a student visa. The press covers student visas like they’re some sort of birthright. No, a student visa is like me inviting you into my home.
If you come into my home and put all kinds of crap on my couch, I’m going to kick you out of my house. And so, you know, that’s what we’re doing with our country, thanks to the president.
Marco Rubio is right, regardless of the faux outrage and rending of garments of the Left. Assaulting Jewish students is not free speech by the pro-Hamas Campus caucus and there is no Constitutional right of any foreign student to steal American intellectual property.
Revoke away, Mr. Secretary.
