Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made an interesting confession while on comedian Theo Von’s podcast.
Kennedy, while speaking with Von, discussed his past addiction to drugs and shared details of just how bad his habit got.
During one part of the discussion, he shared that one time, in order to get his fix, he snorted cocaine off a toilet seat!
MLive covered Kennedy’s appearance on Theo Von’s podcast more closely:
Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made a stunning admission in a podcast appearance Thursday related to his previously acknowledged drug use. During an interview with comedian Theo Von on the “This Past Weekend w/Theo Von” podcast, Kennedy kicked off the show by discussing how he met Von.
“We’ve been in recovery together for years,” Kennedy said.
Von confirmed the duo met at early-morning recovery meetings prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Kennedy, who has been in recovery for more than 40 years, then began to talk about how he formed a “pirate” group of people who continued to meet during the pandemic, leading to his admission.
“I said this when we came in and I said ‘I don’t care what happens, I’m going to a meeting everyday,’” Kennedy said. “I’m not scared of a germ, I used to snort cocaine off of toilet seats. I know this disease will kill me.
“If I don’t treat it, which for me means going to meetings everyday, it’s just bad for my life.”
From there the duo briefly discuss recovery before moving on to a range of topics, including Kennedy’s work at HHS, and his time as a lawyer.

This isn’t the first time Kennedy has spoken about his past addiction problems.
Take a look:
For decades, I’ve maintained my sobriety by regularly participating in the sobriety of others and attending AA meetings. The changes I’ve seen in those 40 years are astounding.

PBS reported Kennedy was previously addicted to heroin for over 14 years:
Kennedy told attendees that he was addicted to heroin for 14 years, beginning when he was a teenager. During those years, he was constantly making promises to quit, both to himself and to his family.
“I didn’t want to be someone who woke up every morning thinking about drugs,” he said, noting that one of the worst parts of addiction was his total “incapacity to keep contracts with myself.”
Kennedy said he eventually stumbled upon a book by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung that claimed people who believed in God got better faster and had more enduring recoveries, so he worked to rekindle his faith and started attending 12-step meetings.
