The alleged bomber behind the explosion outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas has been identified as 37-year-old Matthew Livelsberger, a U.S. Army veteran with a history in special forces. As the day has gone on, new reports have now uncovered revelations hinting at the man’s political leanings, adding another layer to the ongoing investigation into what the FBI is treating as a potential act of terrorism.

Livelsberger, who served nearly two decades in the military specializing in advanced technology and engineering, was identified as the driver of a Tesla Cybertruck that detonated outside the luxury hotel on New Year’s Day. The explosion killed Livelsberger, injured seven bystanders, and caused significant damage to the area. Investigators are now combing through his personal and digital history for clues.

A troubling aspect of Livelsberger’s profile has come to light: his apparent disdain for former President Donald Trump. Social media posts from his wife, Sara Livelsberger, have also resurfaced, highlighting her vocal opposition to Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign. In one 2016 post, she described herself as a “registered Democrat” and proudly displayed a “Stop Bigotry” sign featuring a cartoon image of Trump. While there is no indication that Sara had prior knowledge of her husband’s actions, her political commentary is now under scrutiny.

Matthew Livelsberger’s own political leanings remain a subject of speculation. Friends and family describe him as private and politically disengaged in recent years, though his wife’s political activism could suggest shared sentiments. Law enforcement sources say Livelsberger’s behavior in the weeks leading up to the bombing was erratic, but no overt threats or manifestos have been discovered.

The FBI is also investigating potential links between the Las Vegas explosion and a separate attack that occurred the same day in New Orleans, where another Army veteran drove a rented pickup truck into a crowd, killing at least 14 people. Both vehicles were reportedly rented from the same service, and authorities are probing whether the two attacks were coordinated.

Following the Las Vegas attack, it was reported that Sara had not heard from her husband, Matthew, for several days prior to the attack. The couple purchased a home together in Colorado Springs in 2015, and authorities have linked Matthew to multiple addresses in the city, including a separate townhouse that the FBI searched overnight.

In 2023, Sara participated in the Florida Blue Community Social Impact Competition as part of “The Village of Moms in Recovery” team, according to a Florida Atlantic University post. The team presented a peer-support community living model for mothers in recovery.

U.S. Army officials provided a statement to News5 on Thursday morning detailing the military service of Master Sgt. Matthew Alan Livelsberger: “Master Sgt. Matthew Alan Livelsberger enlisted as an 18X and served in the active duty Army from January 2006 to March 2011. Livelsberger then joined the National Guard from March 2011 to July 2012, followed by the Army Reserve from July 2012 to December 2012. He entered the active duty Army in December 2012 and was a U.S. Army Special Operations Soldier.”

“Additionally, U.S. Army Special Operations Command can confirm Livelsberger was assigned to the command and on approved leave at the time of his death. USASOC is in full cooperation with federal and state law enforcement agencies, but as a matter of policy, will not comment on ongoing investigations.”
