Former Vice President Kamala Harris was reportedly taken aback by her defeat to President Donald Trump, believing until the last moment that victory was hers, as detailed in a new tell-all book.

According to Amie Parnes, a reporter for The Hill, on the podcast Somebody’s Gotta Win with Tara Palmeri, Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, were unprepared for the outcome.

“She was completely shocked, and [Walz] was shocked,” Parnes revealed, delving into her latest publication, Fight: Inside the Wildest Battle for the White House, co-authored with NBC’s Jonathan Allen.

The book paints a vivid picture of chaos and disbelief within the Harris campaign on the night of the election, describing Walz as “stunned” in his hotel room, speechless at the unfolding results.

Parnes recounted the scene, saying, “He has no words. And people are kind of explaining to him, same thing with her. And she’s like, are you sure? Have we done a recount? Should we do a recount?”

Parnes also highlighted a pervasive sense of overconfidence within the campaign, “They thought that they were going to win. And so, you know, when they come back now and say, ‘Oh, no, we didn’t really have a chance.’ No, that’s not what they were thinking. They thought they were going to win,” she added.

The narrative continues with insights into the internal dynamics of the campaign, where staffers reportedly felt misled by their leaders.

“Kamala Harris was looking at her crowd size, and they felt like the vibe was strong and people were saying, ‘Oh, we have more boots on the ground. We’re doing better in fundraising,’” Parnes noted, illustrating the disconnect.

“And she bought all of that. She bought the hype, and so did a lot of people in the campaign.”

In the days following her unexpected loss, Harris purportedly confided in friends that the timing of the election and former President Joe Biden’s decision to run were detrimental to her campaign. “She could have won, she told friends, if only the election was later in the calendar — or she got in earlier. In other words, Joe Biden was to blame,” according to the authors.

However, not all agreed with this sentiment. One of Harris’s friends bluntly dismissed the notion, “That is f—ing bonkers,” suggesting that a shorter campaign might have actually been more advantageous.

Despite securing 226 electoral votes against Trump’s 312 and garnering 48.3% of the popular vote to Trump’s 49.8%, Harris’s campaign faced insurmountable challenges, culminating in a loss that left her and her team reeling from what many inside thought was a guaranteed win.
