Globe and Mail reported Monday morning that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce his exit as party leader as he faces the Pierre Poilievre-led Conservative party, which is projected to win overwhelmingly in the October elections. Citing unnamed Canadian Liberal Party sources, Trudeau “could announce the decision as early as Monday, ahead of his party’s national caucus meeting on Wednesday.”
Trudeau reportedly wants to make the announcement before the meeting to avoid it looking like he was forced out by his party’s lawmakers—many of whom have called for him both publicly and privately to resign, reports Forbes.
“Trudeau’s government was dealt a blow last month when his Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland publicly announced her resignation in a letter criticizing the prime minister” adds Forbes.
Trudeau’s exit will occur just weeks before former President Donald Trump is set to take back the presidency of the United States. President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to impose steep tariffs on all imports from the country.
In November, Trump announced plans to impose 25% tariffs on all products from Mexico and Canada as one of his first executive orders, alluding to “a Caravan coming from Mexico, composed of thousands of people” which “seems to be unstoppable in its quest to come through our currently Open Border.” Trump said the tariffs would remain in place “until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!”
Resigning as the leader of Canada’s Liberal Party will set up his ouster as Prime Minister as well. RedState.com emphasizes:
As of now, there are two options for Trudeau’s future. The Liberals could name an interim leader, which would see him stepping down as Prime Minister almost immediately. They could also try to hold a leadership election, which would take months, possibly allowing Trudeau to remain in place until it’s completed. Either way, he’s done for as a political force, and that’s a great thing for Canadians.
