President Donald Trump on Thursday congratulated Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost — a Chicago native — on being elected the new pope.

“Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope,” Trump said in a post to Truth Social. “It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”

Prevost, who will be known as Pope Leo XIV, was elected as the new pope by the Cardinals in a two-day conclave and will be the first American pontiff in history.

Prevost, 69, was born in Chicago and is Peruvian. He has previously served as president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America since 2023.

Outside the West Wing on Thursday, Trump indicated that the White House has received a call about scheduling a meeting with Leo.

“I do. yes. They’ve already called,” he said to reporters when asked if he planned on meeting with the Pope. “They have already spoken to us and we’ll see what happens. But again, to have the Pope from the United States of America that’s a great honor. That’s a great honor.”
