More than 150 pro-life leaders from across the United States urged Congress this week to cut off taxpayer funding of the abortion industry.
The national coalition, composed of leaders from every state, submitted a letter March 26 to lawmakers pressing them to leverage this legislative moment and stop the public subsidization of abortion providers. The pro-life leaders highlighted contributions to Planned Parenthood.

“Per their last annual report, Planned Parenthood alone took the lives of nearly 400,000 babies and received almost $700 million – nearly $2 million a day – from taxpayers in just one year,” Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America said in a March 26 press release.
This renewed push comes as Congress weighs budget reconciliation options. The advocates argued that earlier reconciliation bills in 2015 and 2017 had already laid the groundwork to defund what they call “Big Abortion.”
Now, with a Republican-led Congress and a supportive White House, they see an opening to act decisively.
“Abortion is the leading cause of death in America and for too long, hardworking Americans have been forced to underwrite it,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.
The letter emphasized that through their decision in the 2024 election, “the American people gave a mandate – it is time for change in Washington,” adding that the new Republican trifecta should “cut funding for Big Abortion, including Planned Parenthood.”
“The abortion industry never deserves our tax dollars,” Dannenfelser added. “[T]his Republican Congress has both the support and the duty to defund Big Abortion.”
The pro-life advocates also cited recent scandals and tragedies involving Planned Parenthood facilities as evidence of systemic harm.
The New York Times recently reported on Planned Parenthood facilities where women endured botched abortions, unsanitary conditions, and improperly placed IUDs.
“While leaving patients vomiting from rank conditions, Planned Parenthood prioritized pouring millions of dollars into woke lobbying and trying to defeat Republicans in races from the school board to the presidency,” the pro-life leaders’ letter stated.
In Missouri, staff at a Planned Parenthood were caught on camera offering to help a man obtain an abortion for a 13-year-old girl, assuring him, “We never tell the parents anything.”
In one recent tragedy, 18-year-old Lexi Arguello died after complications arose following a late-term abortion at a Colorado Planned Parenthood, when the clinic allegedly delayed transferring her to emergency care.
Another woman, who traveled across state lines for an abortion, required emergency surgery after an Illinois abortionist left parts of her aborted baby’s body inside her, according to a lawsuit.
Meanwhile, a Planned Parenthood facility in Columbia, Missouri, admitted to using moldy surgical equipment on women for months before eventually shutting down in 2018.
“Women and children deserve better care,” the letter concluded. “In an era of reexamining federal funding, Congress should start by cutting funding for Big Abortion in the upcoming reconciliation bill.”
