Patrick Mahomes threw a disastrous pick six as the Jacksonville Jaguars condemned the Kansas City Chiefs to their third defeat of the season Monday night.

Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence enjoyed a night to savor at EverBank Stadium, completing 18 of his 25 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns – including a sensational game-winner at the death.

Mahomes, meanwhile, completed 29 of his 41 passes for 318 yards, a touchdown and, disastrously, a 99-yard pick six.

Late in the third quarter of Monday’s game, the Chiefs quarterback tried to find JuJu Smith-Schuster in the end zone on a 2nd-and-goal, only for Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd to pick him off at Jacksonville’s two-yard line.

Lloyd then brushed off Travis Kelce and dodged out the way of a flying Mahomes as he desperately tried to stop him, before getting past Kareem Hunt and running almost 100 yards for a breathtaking touchdown.

The three-time Super Bowl winner was left visibly dejected after his rare error, which helped the hosts move 21-14 in front before the fourth quarter. It was only the sixth pick six he has thrown over the course of his stellar eight-year NFL career.

And in the end the interception return proved costly for his team, who were beaten 31-28 after an insane late touchdown by opposite number Lawrence.

The latter tripped, got up and scrambled for a one-yard touchdown with 23 seconds remaining – turning a laughable miscue into an improbable score which earned his team victory.

The crazy ending halted the Jags’ eight-game losing streak to the Chiefs (2-3).

Lawrence was perfect when it mattered most for the Jaguars (4-1). He dropped a precision pass to Brian Thomas Jr. for a 33-yard gain on the go-ahead drive and then hit Dyami Brown for another big gain. Chamarri Conner was flagged for pass interference against Thomas on the next play, setting up Lawrence’s trip and score.

Right guard Patrick Mekari stepped on his right foot as he took the snap, and he fell several yards in the backfield. But Lawrence got up and somehow found the end zone. It helped that several defenders, including Chris Jones, stopped on the play.

‘Sheer panic on the ground,’ he said after the win. ‘We didn’t have any timeouts. I was just gonna throw it out of bounds to stop the clock. There was really no one around me. So, went and made a play.’

Earlier in the game Mahomes was accused of ‘b****ing’ and ‘bullying’ referees into giving the Chiefs a controversial touchdown.

Early on in Jacksonville, the three-time Super Bowl winner threw a short pass to Kelce for the opening score of the night.

It initially appeared that JuJu Smith-Schuster would be called for pass interference after he collided with the defender tasked with covering Kelce. A flag was thrown but after protests from Chiefs players – including Mahomes – the touchdown was awarded. That is despite ESPN’s rules analyst arguing they should be penalized.

The ‘disgusting’ outcome sparked fury among many NFL fans on social media, with Skip Bayless among those to accuse the refs of bowing to the Chiefs quarterback.

The former Fox Sports star claimed he ‘talked the refs into wrongly picking up a flag’ and many others went further, accusing Mahomes of ‘b****ing’ and ‘whining’.

Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy also hobbled off the field in the third quarter after appearing to tweak an ankle but returned a few plays later. Worthy had been listed as questionable because he got off the team flight with a swollen ankle.
