The NFL is a great league, but politically, they honestly have no idea what the hell they’re doing.

The National Football League delivered a clear statement through its handling of fines following Wild Card Weekend. The league appears willing to overlook certain messages on the field, as Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair was not one of the players penalized for their on-field conduct recently.

The league released a list Saturday of eight players fined for infractions over the wild card round, all related to unnecessary roughness or unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.

Al-Shaair had prominently displayed eyeblack on his face bearing the phrase “Stop the Genocide,” which remained clear as day throughout the game and during his subsequent postgame interview on ESPN. Under NFL policy, players are barred from displaying personal messages, and their fine schedule prescribes an $11,593 penalty for a first offense of this nature.

Despite the rule violation being evident on national television, the league chose not to issue any discipline to Al-Shaair.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim advocacy organization, previously praised Al-Shaair in comments to OutKick, commending him “for using his platform to express opposition to genocide during [Monday] night’s primetime football game.”

The anti-Israel phrase “Stop the Genocide” has gained widespread use — and sparked considerable debate — in connection with protests surrounding the Israel-Hamas conflict and the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Pro-Palestinian demonstrators have employed the slogan to accuse Israel of genocide in response to its military operations following Hamas’s Oct. 2023 attack on the Jewish nation.

When contacted by OutKick, the NFL declined to clarify its position regarding Al-Shaair’s use of the slogan.

This approach stands in notable contrast to the league’s response in 2024 when San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa displayed a personal message.

Bosa, after a “Sunday Night Football” game, appeared wearing a MAGA hat while his teammates were being interviewed by NBC. The NFL fined Bosa a total of $11,255 for his message, marking the first such penalty of the 2024 season. In both cases, players appear to have violated the same provision — Rule 5, Section 4, Article 8 of the NFL rulebook, per OutKick — which forbids players from wearing, displaying or conveying personal messages (including those of a political nature) that are visible to fans in the stadium or television viewers at home.

Yet the league swiftly penalized Bosa for his MAGA hat while taking no action against Al-Shaair for his anti-Israel slogan.

It seems the only thing more inconsistent than the NFL‘s officiating is their definition of what violates the rules and what doesn’t.
