Kyren Lacy, a former standout wide receiver at LSU who had declared for the NFL draft, was found dead in Houston Saturday night, his attorney confirmed Sunday. He was 24-years-old.

The cause of death is suspected to be suicide, according to a report from the New York Post. Houston police referred media inquiries to the Harris County Medical Examiner’s office, which did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press on Sunday.

Lacy was set to stand trial over his alleged involvement in a fatal car crash that killed a 78-year-old man in Louisiana this past December.

Police allege that Lacy was driving a 2023 Dodge Charger south on a Louisiana highway and “recklessly passed multiple vehicles at a high rate of speed” and entered the oncoming lane in a no passing zone, according to police documents obtained by local outlet WAFB. A truck was forced to swerve in order to avoid a collision with Lacy’s vehicle, at which point the vehicle behind it collided with another vehicle going in the opposite direction.

“Following the crash, Lacy drove around the crash scene and fled south on LA Hwy 20 without stopping to render aid, call emergency services, or report his involvement in the crash,” police documents allege.

Herman Hall, 78, was critically injured while traveling as a passenger in one of the vehicles involved in the crash. Hall, a former Marine, was transported to an area hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

A grand jury was scheduled to begin hearing the case on Monday, the New York Post reported. Lacy, who took part in LSU’s pro day on March 26, was facing charges of negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run with death and reckless operation of a vehicle.

Lacy’s attorney confirmed his death in a statement to WAFB-TV.

“Kyren’s was scheduled to have his matter heard before a grand jury tomorrow wherein we were very confident the evidence, after being fully collected and reviewed, would lead to a declination of charges,” his attorney said.

“From the very beginning, this so-called investigation took on the appearance of an overzealous, targeted effort—what can only be described as a witch hunt—fueled by who Kyren was and the public profile he carried. The decision by the investigating agency to charge him at all, in our view, was not only unjustified, it was disturbing. It’s imperative to understand the Lafourche Parish District Attorney, to this day, has not formally charged Kyren,” the statement added.

Lacy spent two years with the LSU Tigers after transferring from Louisiana in 2022. He did not play in LSU’s 44-31 Texas Bowl win over Baylor on New Year’s Eve.

During the 2024 college football season, Lacy led LSU in touchdowns and hauled in a total of 58 passes. He was listed just outside the top 100 in CBS Sports’ NFL Draft Prospect rankings prior to the case, while some analysts ranked him even higher.
