Democrat Governor of New York Kathy Hochul has deployed 1,000 National Guard members in New York City’s subway stations.

Gov. Hochul initially deployed 750 National Guard members but deployed an additional 250 on Thursday.

In a statement, Hochul shared, “I’ll be clear: this is not in response to a specific crime. We’re not seeing a trend that’s alarming. But it’s about continuing a strategy that has proven its success and expanding it to protect even more people.”

New York is expected to see 8 million visitors during the Christmas season.

Here’s what Spectrum News reported:

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Wednesday she is deploying 250 additional National Guard members to help support the city’s subway system.

The governor initially deployed 750 National Guard members, and a combined 250 New York State Police and MTA Police personnel, into the system in March to help with NYPD bag checks.

Hochul noted during Wednesday’s press conference that the city is expected to see 7.5 million to 8 million more visitors during the holiday season.

“I’ll be clear: this is not in response to a specific crime. We’re not seeing a trend that’s alarming. But it’s about continuing a strategy that has proven its success and expanding it to protect even more people,” Hochul said at an MTA news conference.

Hochul, alongside MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber, also announced that 100% of all subway cars now have cameras — completing a plan that started in 2022.

Last Thursday, the MTA says the transit system hit its highest ridership since before the pandemic, at 4.5 million riders.

This isn’t Hochul’s first time deploying the National Guard.

Take a look:

Per ABC 7 News:

Fighting crime in the New York City subways is now getting more attention.

This time from Governor Kathy Hochul who announced on Wednesday that cameras are now on every subway car, reaching full coverage in the system ahead of schedule.

The other part of the equation is the Governor announced that during the holidays, an additional 250 National Guard members will patrol the subway system.

It brings the number of National Guard members stationed at subway entrances to 1,000. A show of force intended to deter crime and to reassure riders.

The Governor and MTA chairman insist they are making progress in driving down crime in the transit system. Overall crime is down since the pandemic but not in every category.
