Just weeks after MSNBC debuted its brand new primetime lineup in an attempt to salvage plummeting viewership, audiences made clear their feelings about the direction, and it’s not positive for the network. Over the course of May, the outlet has tumbled 41 percent in viewership among the key demographic.

And that’s not the only area MSNBC has taken a serious hit. They also dropped 34 percent in the total day demo compared to where they were a year ago.

One of the company’s hosts hardest hit was former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, who, on May 5, was given Rachel Maddow’s 9 pm slot from Tuesday to Friday. Maddow, who has always been a significant draw for MSNBC, said she believed Psaki would surpass her success. Maddow came back briefly to cover the first 100 days of President Donald Trump’s second term, but now only anchors on Mondays.

According to The Daily Mail, “The latest ratings for ‘The Briefing with Jen Psaki’ came on May 22, when it failed to crack the coveted 1 million viewer mark. Sean Hannity’s show on Fox News, which also airs at 9pm, had 2.3 million total viewers that night. Psaki’s show also performed dismally with the 25-54 key age demographic, only pulling in 55,000 viewers in that category. By comparison, Hannity had 210,000 viewers in the key demo. On May 5, MSNBC premiered The Weeknight, a panel show featuring Symone Sanders Townsend, Michael Steele, and Alicia Menendez.”

Despite the confidence Maddow has in Psaki, the former press secretary has not been able to boost viewership for the 9 pm time slot. A panel show called “The Weeknight,” featuring Alicia Menendez, Michael Steele, and Symone Sanders Townsend, is also suffering from abysmal ratings compared to the numbers it pulled in the previous year.

“The Weeknight” is the replacement for former controversial host Joy Reid’s “The ReidOut,” which was booted off the network in February. This was largely the result of her deeply offensive social media posts and poor ratings.

“Psaki has also presided over a long-term loss in eyeballs. Her show has averaged 973,000 total viewers since it premiered, a 46 percent drop from the average of 1.82 million who were watching her timeslot when Maddow was hosting during the first 100 days of the Trump administration,” the Daily Mail continued.

Her ratings are also down 20 percent from the average pulled in by Alex Wagner. Wagner was the host for the show in 2024 while Maddow was anchoring on Mondays.

The report reveals that Maddow herself is not able to keep viewers tuned in, averaging only 1.8 million viewers on her program. For context, that’s a drop of 24 percent from last year when she had an audience of 2.4 million viewers.

“CNN is also lagging far behind Fox News, but all of its shows, with the exception of Abby Phillip’s at 10 pm, have been beating MSNBC in the key demo. Fox’s ‘The Five’ remains its most popular show and the most popular in cable news overall, averaging 3.77 million viewers a night this month,” the article read.
